A list of stratovolcanoes active in geologically recent (Holocene) times follows below. The Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program database lists more than 700 such stratovolcanoes.

• Stromboli. Continuously erupting for more than 2000 years. The second most active volcano in Europe.
• Vulcano, one of the Lipari Islands. Last erupted in 1890.
• Alban Hills, located 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Rome in Lazio. Last eruption happened in about 5,000 BC.
