Algapur (Pron:/ˈalɡəˈpʊə/) (Bengali: আলগাপুর) is a town and Tehsil or Block in Hailakandi district in the state of Assam, India. It is located 32 km from District headquarters Hailakandi.

Geography

Algapur is located at 24°52′01″N 92°41′14″E / 24.8668104°N 92.6872046°E / 24.8668104; 92.6872046.[1] It has an average elevation of 25 metres (82 feet).

Demographics

As per 2011 census of India, Algapur has population of 2,732 of which 1,473 are males while 1,259 are females. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 169 which is 6.19% of total population of town. In this town, Female Sex Ratio is of 855 against state average of 958. Moreover, Child Sex Ratio is around 899 compared to Assam state average of 962.
Literacy rate of the town is 97.35% higher than state average of 72.19% of which Male and female literacy are 98.99% and 95.42% respectively.

The national highway NH 6 passes through the town and connects this place to Aizwal via Hailakandi and Guwahati via Shillong.

Politics

Algapur is part of Karimganj (Lok Sabha constituency).[2] It is also a part of Algapur (Vidhan Sabha constituency).
