Wu Ying Chieh (simplified Chinese: 吴映洁; traditional Chinese: 吳映潔, also known as Gui Gui (Chinese: 鬼鬼) or Emma Wu, born 11 August 1989 in Taiwan Keelung), is a Taiwanese Mandopop singer and actress currently represented by South Korean entertainment company CJ E&M under the stage name Gemma.[2][3]

Career

Debut

In June 2006, Gui Gui debuted as one of the original nine members of the Taiwanese girl group Hei She Hui Mei Mei (黑澀會美眉), but in 2016, she revealed that she went through 3 rounds of casting (2 unofficial) by playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with an erhu. In 2008, the group underwent a name change and after a year-long hiatus, Hey Girl launched their first self-titled debut album. Consisting of eight girls, Hey Girl often collaborated with the Taiwanese boy band Lollipop F.

Departure from Hey Girls

In April 2009, Gui Gui left the management of Channel V. Her former manager, Andy Chang, expressed that she was unlikely to renew her contract, and with an ambiguous post on her personal blog, Gui Gui admitted to her decision to leave the group. Andy Chang later clarified that Hey Girl's music contract did not belong to Channel V, and thus, Gui Gui would still partake in the group's promotional activities per usual.

However, the album promotions following his statement did not include Gui Gui, who, at the time, was said to be busy with the promotion of her idol drama, Mysterious Incredible Terminator. On May 6, 2009, Andy Chang officially confirmed that Gui Gui would not be renewing her management contract with his agency, and that her involvement with Hey Girl would have to be clarified with Warner Music, Taiwan.

Acting career

In 2007, Gui Gui, along with her group members, made their acting debuts in the drama Brown Sugar Macchiato, in collaboration with Lollipop. The first episode was aired in Taiwan on July 15, 2007. Later Lollipop admitted, on the talk show Kangxi Lai Le, that the drama had been more of an introductory chapter to the two groups as opposed to a major production. Members were told to act like themselves, and many subplots were explained only briefly due to the large cast. [4] After thirteen episodes, the drama ended on October 7, 2007, and an official soundtrack was released with songs from both Lollipop and Hey Girl.[5] For their work on Brown Sugar Macchiato, Gui Gui and Wang Zi won the nomination for Best Onscreen Couple that same year.

In 2008, Gui Gui starred in Mysterious Incredible Terminator opposite of Aaron Yan from Fahrenheit and Alien Huang. After the wrapping up of Mysterious Incredible Terminator, Gui Gui and Aaron, widely praised for their on screen chemistry and closeness, were to co-star in Taiwanese drama Momo Love, based on the Japanese manga Momoka Typhoon. Yet, the production was halted due to scheduling conflicts with the promotion of Fahrenheit's new album. When filming resumed, Gui Gui was replaced by Cyndi Wang and Aaron was cast as the second male lead in Love Buffet while his original role in Momo Love was taken over by bandmate, Jiro Wang.

In 2011, Gui Gui signed to a new entertainment management company, Polyface Entertainment Media Group. In the early months of her solo career, Gui Gui hosted a number of variety programs, but they were later canceled for reasons unbeknownst. After a short hiatus, Gui Gui returned to the small screen and participated in Taiwanese idol dramas such as I, My Brother, a transcontinental collaboration between Malaysia and Taiwan. On the set of I, My Brother, Gui Gui was rumored to have become involved with her Taiwanese costar, George Hu, her on-screen love interest in the drama. Later that year, Gui Gui also received an invite to Mainland China to film the television version of Painted Skin,[6] in which she collaborated with Fiona Sit, Chen Yi Rong, Li Zhong Han, and many other Mainland and Hong Kong artists. It was also this rare opportunity that allowed Gui Gui to expand her acting career outside Taiwan.

From mid-2012 to early 2013, Gui Gui spent her time in Mainland China, filming the three part-movie series The Four with Ronald Cheng, Anthony Wong, Deng Chao, and Liu Yifei. In February 2013, she was confirmed to take part in the Korean reality show, We Got Married with Ok Taecyeon, of South Korean boy band 2PM, as her virtual husband. We Got Married features celebrity couples being given tasks reflecting married life. Gui Gui's involvement in the show boosted her popularity in countries outside of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and regarding this experience, Gui Gui commented, "I am honored to be able to participate in such a good program. I have had a great time, and learnt a lot from working with such a professional team."

From 2014 to 2015, she starred in the Chinese TV dramas A Different Kind of Pretty Man(不一樣的美男子), ShenZhen (一男三女合租記), The Girl Wearing Tassel Earrings(戴流蘇耳環的少女), and The Legend of the Flying Daggers(飛刀又見飛刀 (2016年電視劇)).

Music career

On March 7, 2016, Gui Gui signed with CJ E&M and underwent a 3-month training session to prepare for her Korean debut. On September 26, she released her first official music video, Sugar Rush, and on October 7, she launched her official EP, GEMMA. The mini album consists of five tracks, four of which are in Chinese and one in Korean. Gui Gui has also stated that GEMMA is a new identity - a combination of her past and present profiles. "G" is derived from her nickname, Ghost (鬼鬼), and Emma is her English name.
