Tanda is a city and municipal board in the Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census of India,[2] Tanda had a population of 195,079. Men constitute 53% of the population, and women 47%. Tanda has an average literacy rate of 61%, slightly higher than India's national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 67%, while female literacy is 54%. Approximately 16% of the population are under six years of age.

History

Tanda has a rich historical background. It used to be a barren land until Mughal Emperor Farrukhsiar asked Raja Syed Mohammad Hayat to make a civilization on the bank of the Ghagra river in 1714 A.D. The Royal Estate of Tanda stretches from the borders of old Awadh to the borders of Bihar.

Before the famous 1857 mutiny, Tanda's then Raja Syed Hussain Ali, with his brother Raja Syed Abbas Ali, stood against the British army troops, which were moving towards Delhi, and fought a fierce battle in which many of the Estate's soldiers died. It was Raja Syed Mohammad Raza who by his virtue of intelligence was able to hold on the legacy. Raja Syed Mohammad Abbas and Raja Syed Hussain Abbas continued with the legacy. Today Raja Syed Jafar Raza (Parvez ) holds the heritage.

Economy

Tanda is an industrial city famous for its Tanda Terricot clothes. The "Tanda Terricot" are now manufactured on power looms. However, the city has a long history of weaving using hand looms. Things changed with the introduction of electricity in the early 1960s. Clothes manufactured in Tanda includes lungi, gamcha, Arabian Scarf (shemagh), saris, Suit length, Shirting (Check, Lining, Matka Checks, dobby Check, etc.), Stoles etc. Few famous textile company Madina textiles, Mohit India, Super India, Hindustan Textiles, Madina textile industries, Sikka Textiles, Janmorcha texties, HA Sattar & sons. Other important industrial establishments in the region include a power plant run by the National Thermal Power Corporation and the Jaypee cement factory. National Thermal Power Corporation has an installed capacity of 440 MW (4 x 110 MW). The power plant also houses a residential colony along with a hospital and the educational facilities: (Rajkiya Vidyut Parishad Intermediate College, Dalimss, Vivekananda Shishu Kunj (UP Board & CBSE Board) and recreational clubs hosting various sports facilities and a gymnasium. The colony is located beside the Sarayu River. Jaypee has its own township and hospital/dispensary. This hospital provides free treatment and medicine to nearby villagers.

Transportation

Tanda is well connected by rail and road to the rest of the country. The rail connections are used primarily for goods transportation for the power plant and the cement factory. For passenger transportation, Akbarpur Junction and Faizabad Junction is the main option. Akbarpur is located about 25 km and Faizabad is about 52 km away from Tanda. Tanda is around 155 km from Varanasi, 200 km from Lucknow and around 80 km from Gorakhpur.

Frequent government bus services are not available to nearby towns and cities, so many private travel agencies provide frequent bus services to Lucknow and Faizabad. SBS (Singh Bus Service) run a very common bus service for the local people to Azamgarh. Bus services are available from Tanda Bus Stop and Zubair Chauraha.

The nearest Airport is Babatpur Airport near Varanasi, and Amausi Airport in Lucknow.

Administration

As of 2013, Hazi Azimulhaq Pahalwan is the MLA of Tanda Constituency. Lalji Verma Ex-MLA and Minister of UP Govt hails from same constituency. Dr.Masood Ahemad was former Education Minister who belongs to Village Prithvipur of this region. Vishal verma Ex-MLC of Faizabad and Ambedkar Nagar hails from the same constituency of village-budhnapur,he is candidate of BSP in 2012 election and for now vidhansabha prabhari for the party.

Culture

Many festivals are celebrated here (by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs), such as Durga Pooja and Eid. Some local events like Datikandhava [a festival that celebrates Lord Shri Krishna], Ramleela and Haroon Rasheed Mela and the Muharram are also celebrated here. Ramleela of Village-Budhnapur is very famous which is conducted by NGO Sanjay smirti manch,Vijay verma(mathur) director of the NGO who is also block pramukh of Baskhari block.

Mahamaya Rajkiya Allopathic Medical College and Trilok Nath Postgraduate College are the two degree colleges in the city. Trilok Nath Postgraduate College offers B.A. in a few subjects including Hindi and Urdu. There are many intermediate-level colleges such as Arya Kanya Inter College, Lalta Prasad Kanya Inter College, Muslim Niswan Inter College, Fatima Girls Inter College, Adarsh Janta Inter College, Qaumi Inter College and Hobart Triloknath Inter College.

C. English Academy, Bal Shiksha Niketan, Madarsa Manzar-e-Haq, Noor-e-Haq Islamia, Kanz-Ul-Uloom, Adars Janta Inter College, National Public School, Cosmopolitan School,Crescent English Academy, Modern Anglo, Dalimss and D A V Public School, Tanda (not DAV academy) are few of the schools in the area. While the majority of the schools have Hindi-medium education, there are several English medium schools including Cosmopolitan School, Vivekanand Shishukunj N.T.P.C. etc. Vivekanand Mahavidyalaya is situated in Heerapur Market on Hanswar road which provides graduation degrees.
