State Route 36 (SR 36) is a 44.5-mile-long (71.6 km) east–west state highway in the northern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. The western terminus of the highway is at its intersection with SR 33 at Wren, an unincorporated community in Lawrence County. The eastern terminus of the highway is at its intersection with U.S. Route 231 (US 231) at Lacey’s Spring in Morgan County.

Route description

SR 36 is aligned along a two-lane road for its entire length. The interchange with Interstate 65 (I-65) is one of two exits the interstate highway has that leads to Hartselle. From its western terminus until its intersection with SR 67 near Somerville, the highway follows a general east–west orientation. From there, the highway begins to ascend Brindlee Mountain and heads to the northeast. Just east of its eastern terminus at Lacey’s Spring, the highway turns eastwardly as it heads towards US 231.

History

The current designation of SR 36 was formed in 1957 along the former route of SR 33. Beginning in 1940, the first incarnation of SR 36 was along the current route of SR 33.
