Murray Central is a light rail and commuter rail station in Murray, Utah, United States served by the Blue Line and Red Line of Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) TRAX light rail system that operates in Salt Lake County and by the FrontRunner, UTA's commuter rail train that operates along the Wasatch Front with service from Pleasant View in northern Weber County through Ogden, Davis County, Salt Lake City, and Salt Lake County to Provo in central Utah County. The FrontRunner portion of the station is part of the FrontRunner South extension. The Blue Line provides service from Downtown Salt Lake City south to Draper. The Red Line provides service from the University of Utah to the Daybreak Community of South Jordan. The station is situated immediately west of the Intermountain Medical Center complex.

Description

The TRAX portion of the station is located at 5144 Cottonwood Street and is accessed from either East Vine Street on the north or West 5300 South (SR-173/Spartan Street) at 100 West.[1] The FrontRunner portion of the station is located at 140 East Vine Street.[2] However, both TRAX and the FrontRunner are easily accessed from either parking lot. To the east of the station is the Intermountain Medical Center, with its large parking lot. Between the two free Park and Ride lots, there are nearly 1,100 parking spaces available.[3][4][Note 1] The adjacent Intermoutain Medical Center was built on the site of the former Murray Smelter. The Murray Downtown Historic District is across Little Cottonwood Creek to the northeast. The station is located within the Quiet Zone, so trains do not routinely sound their horns when approaching public crossings within this corridor.[9][10] The TRAX portion of the station opened on 4 December 1999[6] and the FrontRunner portion opened, along with the rest of the FrontRunner South, on 10 December 2012.[7] The station is operated by the Utah Transit Authority.

All of UTA's TRAX and FrontRunner trains and stations, streetcars and streetcar stops, and all fixed route buses are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act and are therefore accessible to those with disabilities.[11] Signage at the stations, on the passenger platforms, and on the trains and streetcars clearly indicate accessibility options. Ramps on the passenger platform and assistance from the train operator may be necessary for wheelchair boarding on the Blue Line (weekdays only). (These ramps are not used on weekends or on the Red or Green Lines.) In accordance with the Utah Clean Air Act and UTA ordinance, "smoking is prohibited on UTA vehicles as well as UTA bus stops, TRAX stations, and FrontRunner stations".[12]

Notes

  1. Recently UTA announced that beginning 1 July 2013 it will start a one year pilot program involving most of its TRAX and FrontRunner Park and Ride lots. The purpose of the new program is to make rider connections with the Salt Lake City International Airport more convenient by avoiding the need to park at the airport. The programs allows UTA patrons to park for an "unlimited amount of time" in the designated Park and Ride lots. In addition, UTA will allow free parking in all of its parking garages. Previous UTA policy limited parking to no more than 24 hours, except at its parking garages. As part of the year-long pilot program, "UTA will measure parking lot usage and monitor costs, maintenance requirements, impacts to snow removal and security issues before determining if the program will be extended." There are eight Park and Ride lots that are excluded from this test program and the 24-hour time limit will still apply to these lots. Both of Murray Central Station's lots are specifically included in this test program.[8] Notwithstanding permission to park for extended periods in the applicable Park and Ride Lots, updated signage at the stations advises that the UTA Transit Police request that they be notified anytime a car is parked in one of the lots for more than seven days.
