South Salt Lake City (Main Street)[1][Note 1] is a streetcar stop in South Salt Lake, Utah, in the United States, served by Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) S Line (previously known as the Sugar House Streetcar). The S Line provides service from the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City to the city of South Salt Lake (where it connects with UTA's TRAX light rail system).

Description

The South Salt Lake City stop is located at about 30 East in the median of a newly created street called Central Pointe Place, which runs east-west at about 2200 South; however the official address of the stop is 2240 South Main Street. (Although this stop is located it the median of Central Pointe Place, it should not be confused with the Central Pointe Station.) The island platform is located on the north side of the existing single set of tracks.[Note 2] The stop is easily accessible from both Main Street and State Street (US-89). There is limited angle parking available along a portion of both sides of Central Pointe Place. (As of early February 2014, the Central Pointe Place street was still not open to vehicular traffic.) The passenger platform includes a memorial to the history of the area. The stop began service on 8 December 2013 and is operated by Utah Transit Authority.

All of UTA's TRAX and FrontRunner trains and stations, streetcars and streetcar stops, and all fixed route buses are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act and are therefore accessible to those with disabilities.[2] Signage at the stations, on the passenger platforms, and on the trains clearly indicate accessibility options. In accordance with the Utah Clean Air Act and UTA ordinance, "smoking is prohibited on UTA vehicles as well as UTA bus stops, TRAX stations, and FrontRunner stations".[3]

Streetcar schedule

On weekdays and Saturdays the first eastbound S Line streetcar (to the Fairmont stop) leaves the South Salt Lake City stop at 6:02 am and the first westbound streetcar (to the Central Pointe Station) leaves at 6:30 am. The last eastbound streetcar leaves at 9:02 pm and the last westbound streetcar leaves at 9:30 pm.[Note 3]

On Sundays the first eastbound streetcar leaves at 9:02 am and the first westbound streetcar leaves stop at 9:30 am. The last eastbound streetcar leaves at 7:02 pm and the last westbound streetcar leaves at 7:30 pm.[Note 3]

S Line streetcars run every twenty minutes every day (except holidays when there is no service) and take about twelve minutes to run the length of the route (of Phase 1).[4][Note 3]

While no buses connect directly with any S Line stops, the following bus routes stop in close proximity to the station (on South State Street).

Notes

  1. While the official and proper name of the city in which it is located is "South Salt Lake", the official and proper name of the streetcar stop in the median of Central Pointe Place is "South Salt Lake City".[1] In the initial planning stages of what was then known as the Sugar House Streetcar, the stop was referred to as State Street.
  2. The South Salt Lake City stop provides some interesting clues regarding anticipated future improvements to the S Line. First of all, it has an island platform, even though there is initially only one set of tracks. Moreover, when the tracks were installed across State Street (US-89), just east of the South Salt Lake City stop and the busiest roadway that the S Line crosses, a second set of tracks were installed as well. These secondary tracks are north of the existing line and, while these tracks are in line with where any tracks that would run along the north side of the South Salt Lake City stop platform would connect, the secondary tracks only extend to just beyond the edges of the State Street right of way and do not connect to anything, yet.
