Lehragaga is a town and a municipal council in Sangrur district in the Indian state of Punjab. It is near the border of Punjab and Haryana. Haryana is about 10 km from Lehragaga. It has a railway station. Nowadays Lehragaga is known as an education point in district Sangrur. Many educational colleges are there. Many types of educational courses can be done from here like engineering, b.ed, nursing, art and craft, etc. Baba Hira Singh Institute of Engineering and Technology (5th government college in Punjab under Punjab Technical University) is in Legragaga. This is the point of concentration for the whole town. However, Lehragaga comes in the category of backward area of Punjab but in these days, it is developing with higher rate.

The old trend of Lehragaga is changing into modern and fashionable world. Younger generation of Lehragaga town is playing an important role in the development of the Town with training institutes, colleges and web development companies establishing their offices in the town.

To distinguish it from the other Lehras in Punjab, its name had been modified with the addition of Gaga (an adjoining village).

History

Lehragaga was the part of the princely state of Patiala, founded by Baba Ala Singh. Barbaric Muslim rulers were assassinated by Bhai ManiSingh from this place. After that, a Gurudwara was constructed here. Here, a fair is also held to honor of the memory of Bhai mani Singh. Lehragaga was named by Mohan Garg. He was very kind to poor people; if someone had any kind of problem, then he helps them with money or other things as the person needed. That's why it's called the "lehro lehr samundar aye jaye jaha Mohan ka was inder barse apni rut or Mohan charo mas..."

Lehragaga is a religious city with a lot of temples and gurudwaras. It is the city of the middle-class people who have a good work ethic.

Cultural & Social

The railway station, Post-office and GPF in Lehragaga are famous public places for the Lehragaga people. In the morning and evening, people love to walk there and a lot of people do so. The railway station is frequently used as a park.

Demographics

As of 2013 India census,[1] Lehragaga had a population of 22450. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Lehragaga has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 57%. In Lehragaga, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age .

Maharaja Aggrasen Market: This market starts from railway station and goes toward the main city temple (main mandir). Having shops for all the daily use items, this market is particularly famous for the people visiting from nearby villages. During festival season, this market is majorly decorated by shop owners and decoration done on main temple and nearby gurudwara adds a lot to the beauty of this market.

Khai Road: This road starts from the small canal (particularly known as 'sua') and goes towards the nearby Khai village. This road is the main connecting link between Lehragaga and the villages towards the east of Lehragaga city including city Patran. This road has major hospitals, web development companies and shops for daily use items.

Furniture Market: This market is located at Gaga Road and is famous for its quality furniture since a long time.This market is the best choice for the entire area because furniture available here is good as well as economical.

Rame Wali Khuhi: This market is adjoining to furniture market.Each type of accessory is available in this market.This is also known as Sabji market.From Rami Wali Khui a road touches it named Gaushala road which goes to Lehra Police Station.


Punjabi Colony Road: This market is a link road between Railway Station And Bus Stand.So it is a busy market.This is situated in Punjabi Colony and hence named.

Religious Places

Residents of Lehragaga city are known to be very religious. No matter, what religion a festival belongs to, all the residents of the city participate in all the festivals & events with honor. Major religious places of the city are as following:

Sanatan Dharam Mandir: This temple is located on the main market road and is around .4 km from the railway station & around 1 km from bus stand. Standing on the railway platform, one can easily see the decoration done on the temple.

Main Gurudwara: The Gurudwara too is located near Railway Station and is near Govt. Girls Senior Sec. School, Lehragaga.

Hanuman Mandir: This newly built temple is located on the Lehragaga-Jakhal highway and is around 1 km from the border of city. The temple is mainly famous because of its newly built building with all modern facilities.

Shiv Durga Mandir: This temple is located towards the Gaga side and is famous for its Maha Shivaratri festival celebrations.This templle also consists of Shani Dev Mandir and Sai Mandir.

Baba Mast Ram Samadh: This temple is located on the Lehragaga-Khai Village road. This temple is one amongst the oldest temples of the city. The temple is around 1 km from railway station and is located just opposite to the old power house. This temple is mainly visited by city people on Sundays and is particularly famous amongst females .

Kali Mata Mandir: This is located in the furniture market and is also known as Buddhi Mata Mandir and Fulan Deh Mata Mandir.

Balmiki Mandir:This is located in Chainpura Basti.

Basanti Mata, Kalran Wali Mata Mandir:These two temples are located on the Railway Road near Sh.S.D.S.S.School.

Education Hub of the Area

In now-a-days Lehragaga is known as a famous education hub in the district as well as in the Malwa region of Punjab.It is due to the availability of a large number of colleges in the city. There are colleges in almost every stream though it may be Polytechnic, Engineering, Pharmacy, Arts, Science, Nursing, B.Ed, Art & Craft, commerce etc.

There are many banks in Lehragaga like Punjab National Bank, State Bank of Patiala, Co-Operative Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Punjab and Sind Bank and Axis Bank.

Famous People

Brish Bhan, 3rd CM of Pepsu (Patiala and East Punjab States Union) was from this area. Lehragaga is also hometown of Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, senior Congress leader and former CM of Punjab. Sant Harchand Singh Longowal, well known for Punjab accord in 1984, sometimes referred to as Rajiv-Longowal accord, started his political career from Lehragaga by defeating Brish Bhan in elections. Ch. Gainda Ram has been an important personality of the area. He is remembered by the people of this region as an upright person and thorough gentleman.
