Ebor is a village on Waterfall Way on the Northern Tablelands, New South Wales, Australia. It is situated about 80 km (50 mi) east of Armidale and about a third of the way between Armidale and the coast. At the 2006 census, Ebor and the surrounding area had a population of 160.[1] There is a post office, Fusspots coffee shop / cafe, Hilltop Service station, a hotel/motel and a primary school.

There are two local walks comprising the recreation reserve of approximately 40 hectares accessible immediately south of the Guy Fawkes River bridge near the hotel. This walk follows the Guy Fawkes River south for about half of the walk. Some birdlife can be seen with typical local open grazing land and river views.

The second walk is accessed by crossing the Guy Fawkes River bridge and following the pedestrian path to the left which winds north under the bridge. This path follows closely left of the Guy Fawkes River north and meets the national park's Upper and Lower Falls paths. Numerous wallabies and birdlife can be seen. The Upper and Lower Falls are most spectacular after heavy rain.

Both walks are less than 1 hour, with at least some if not most of the walk being wheelchair accessible with some assistance.

The nearest public toilets are at the Ebor Falls.

The Upper and Lower Falls can also be accessed by vehicle, with the turnoff approximately 500 meters west of the Guy Fawkes River Bridge.

The Bi-Centennial National Horse Trail also passes through Ebor.[3]

The surrounding district is a rich sheep and cattle grazing area. The main tourist attractions are Ebor Falls, Wollomombi Falls, the cool temperate rainforest walks in New England National Park and recreational trout fishing. The Dutton Trout Hatchery on Point Lookout Road was established in 1950 and is one of the largest hatcheries in the state. Visitors can see the various stages of trout development prior to their release in the mountain streams.[4]

History

Ebor Post Office opened on 2 March 1868, closed in 1869 and reopened in 1910.[5]

Climate

Ebor is at fairly high altitude, about 1,300 metres (4,300 ft) and by Australian standards, has cold winters with overnight frost and occasional light snow falls. The average rain fall is 950 millimetres (37 in).
