Railworld Wildlife Haven is a charity run place looked after by volunteers for all to enjoy in Peterborough.[5] It is located beside the Peterborough Nene Valley railway station, but it is a separate organisation. Railworld has model railways, a nature haven and other exhibits.
Overview
Founded in 1985 as Museum of World Railways (MWR), it changed its name in 1992.[1] The centre is open between Easter weekend and the first weekend in November.[6]
Exhibits
- Alco switcher
Railworld has an American Alco S1 switcher diesel locomotive number 804.[7] It is one of the five locomotives built by the American Locomotive Company for the Steel Company of Wales works at Margam.
- Danish Pacific
There is also a Danish Pacific Vauclain compound, DSB No. 996 [8] built by Frichs in the 1950s.
Railworld has two vehicles that are unique:
- Tracked Hovercraft's RTV 31 .
- The Birmingham Maglev vehicle (the only one that people can see and enter).
Transeco Centre
Over the next few years a new exhibition centre is being built called the Transeco Centre. This will promote sustainable transport as well as looking after the heritage vehicles.
