Downtown San Jose station

Map of extension showing position of Downtown San Jose BART

Downtown San Jose BART station is a proposed underground Bay Area Rapid Transit station in downtown San Jose, California, part of the proposed Silicon Valley BART extension. The station would be co-located with the Santa Clara Light Rail Station and would have direct service to the proposed Santa Clara, Richmond and San Francisco/Daly City.[1] It would be preceded by the proposed Alum Rock BART station. This stations will open in 2025.

Background and plans

Scheduled for completion in early 2016,[2] the Warm Springs extension is being built by BART from Fremont to the Warm Springs station under construction in the Warm Springs District in Fremont. This will be followed by the first extension of BART into Santa Clara county, to be built by VTA. The original plan for the San Jose extension included the Downtown San Jose station, but funding could not be secured[3] and the San Jose extension was split into two phases. Phase one, planned for completion in 2018, is the Berryessa Extension[4] into eastern San Jose. The proposed Downtown San Jose station is part of a later, unfunded phase two, the proposed San Jose subway extension which would be completed after 2025.[5] The proposed station would be located between the proposed Alum Rock and proposed Diridon/Arena BART stations.

Local bus service would be provided by VTA in addition to commuter service from Santa Cruz Metro, Monterey Salinas Transit, San Benito Transit and private/ employer shuttles.
