Philanthropy

In 2008 Ryan starting volunteering with other military veterans building vegetable gardens in poverty-stricken South Los Angeles. The idea was environmentalist Kelly Chapman Meyer's. Ryan would speak about the experience later on-camera in the widespread Ford Go Further campaign, "A lot of these kids only see concrete. They only see graffiti. They only see railroad tracks. I'm telling you, when kids are exposed to nature it does something to them and they start seeing the world a little bit differently."

Business

In 2010 Ryan started consulting work with American Heart Association which led to the organization adopting the garden program under its Healthy Living initiative and branding it Teaching Gardens. The program is funded by donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and other community-based organizations. Ryan led the way as manager of the program, with 10 funded gardens in some on LA's most at-risk neighborhoods. Teaching Gardens has grown into a national difference-maker with over 300 gardens across the United States in the ground or in the process of being built.
