20th Century Women is a 2016 American comedy-drama film directed and written by Mike Mills. The film stars Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Lucas Jade Zumann, and Billy Crudup.

The film had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival as the Centerpiece on October 8, 2016[3] and is scheduled to be released on December 25, 2016 by A24.[4]

Cast

Production

20th Century Women was first announced on January 16, 2015, that Mike Mills would direct the film based on his own script, and Annapurna Pictures' Megan Ellison would produce the film along with Anne Carey of Archer Gray and with Youree Henley.[5] The film is set in Santa Barbara 1979 about a single mother who tries to teach her teenage son about love and freedom, along with two other women.[5] On May 14, 2015, Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning joined the female lead cast of the film, in which Bening would play the single mother, Gerwig to play a young sophisticated photographer, and Fanning to play a provocative friend of the single mother's teenage son.[6] On August 3, 2015, Billy Crudup was cast in a supporting role.[7] Roger Neill composed the film's score.[8]

Filming

Principal photography on the film began on September 8, 2015 in Southern California.[5][9] During production on the film, Elle Fanning and Annette Bening were spotted on set.[10] Production concluded on October 27, 2015.[11]

Release

In June 2016, A24 acquired U.S distribution rights to the film.[12] The film had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival as the Centerpiece on October 8, 2016.[13] It will also screen at the AFI Fest on November 16, 2016.[14] The film is scheduled to be released in a limited release on December 25, 2016.[15]

Critical reception

20th Century Women received positive reviews from film critics. It holds a 95% approval rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 19 reviews, with an average rating of 8.3/10.[16] On Metacritic, the film holds a rating of 76 out of 100, based on 12 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[17]
