Park Soo-young (born September 3, 1996),[1][5] known by the stage name Joy, is a South Korean singer and entertainer. She is a member of the K-pop girl group Red Velvet.[6]

Early life

As a child, Joy was interested in trot music.[7] In grade school, she performed the K-rock band Cherry Filter's song "Ori Nalda" ("Flying Duck"), which marked the beginning of her aspiration to become a singer.[8] In 2012, she auditioned and was cast by S.M. Entertainment at the S.M. Global Audition in Seoul. She trained under the agency for two years, during which time she was given the stage name Joy by a vocal coach (representing her cheerful disposition).[1]

Career

Red Velvet

Joy in 2015

Joy was formally introduced as the fourth member of Red Velvet on July 29, 2014.[9][10] She is the only member of the group who wasn't introduced as a part of SM Rookies before group's debut. The group made their music debut with the digital single "Happiness" on August 1, 2014.

Since debut, Red Velvet has experienced notable success and recognition.[11][12][13] After winning three new artist awards in 2014,[14][15] their first mini album Ice Cream Cake went on to become the best selling album by a girl group in South Korea on the Hanteo Chart for the first half of 2015.[16] A few months later, their full-length album The Red topped the Billboard World Albums Chart.[17] The group has garnered over 160,000 album sales and 3.7 million downloads according to Gaon, and won sixteen music show awards (from Show! Music Core, Inkigayo, Show Champion, M! Countdown, The Show and Music Bank), as well as ceremony accolades such as Best Dance – Female, Best Dance Performance – Female Group and 2016 Hot Performance of the Year.[18][19]

Solo activities

In 2015, Joy joined the fourth season of reality show We Got Married, where she appeared opposite BtoB member Yook Sung-jae.[20] She received significant recognition for her participation in the popular TV program and featured in her first solo pictorial in Korean fashion magazine CéCi, concurrent to modeling for Etude House cosmetics.[21]

On December 29, 2015, Joy shared a win with Yook for the Best Couple Award and separately won the 2015 MBC Entertainment Awards – New Star Award.[22][23]

Following group promotions for Red Velvet's second mini album The Velvet, Joy released a duet with Yook on April 16, 2016 entitled "Young Love". The song peaked at #52 on the Gaon Singles Chart.[24][25] Departing from We Got Married on May 7, they became known as one of the longest-running and most popular couples in the show's recent history.[26][27][28] Over the course of We Got Married airing, their videos together on YouTube accumulated over 21.3 million views.[29][30][31]

In mid 2016, S.M. Entertainment issued an official photo series for Joy released once a week via Vyrl mobile applications and SM Town Now. It is entitled Enjoy your Monday with Joy.[32][33] Joy collaborated with Lim Seul-ong in a duet titled "Always In My Heart", a project song under S.M. Entertainment's SM Station released on November 4, 2016.[34][35] The song peaked at #2 on Soribada, genie and Bugs streaming charts[36] and #10 on Gaon.[37]

Personal life

Joy graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul in February 2015.[38] She has two younger sisters.[39]
