Malaysia–Maldives relations refers to bilateral foreign relations between the two countries, Malaysia and the Maldives. Malaysia's high commission in Colombo is also accredited to the Maldives,[1] and Maldives has a high commission in Kuala Lumpur.[2]

History

Both countries were once part of the British Empire and the relations between the two countries has been established since 1968.[1] Malaysia has been one of the important partners for Maldives who has made many contributions to the development of Maldives.[3] In 1983, Maldives has co-sponsored and participated jointly with Malaysia in the establishment of the International Islamic University of Malaysia. Both countries also signed an agreement on economic and technical co-operation on the next year. While in 1994 and 2012, an agreement on air services and legal co-operation activities are also signed.[3][4] In 2013, Mohammed Waheed who is the President of Maldives has visited the former Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad to enhance the bilateral relations of both countries.[5]

Economic relations

Malaysia is one of main import partners for Maldives,[6] and many Maldivian students were studied in Malaysia.[7] One of Malaysia's Airline carriers, Air Asia has interested to propose commence flights to Maldives.[8] Beside that, Maldives also participated at the World Islamic Tourism Mart in Malaysia to improve their tourism industry.[9]
