Oxane "Gypsy" Taub (b. 1969) is an American naturism and "body freedom" activist.

Early life and education

Taub was born in Moscow, Soviet Union. She graduated from high school there and then in the fall of 1988, she moved to and lived in Chinatown, Boston and later she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area.[1] While in the Bay Area, she came to appreciate the music of the Grateful Dead.[2]

Activism career

Taub claims to be an activist since 2004. She is an anti-war activist, 9/11 Truth movement, media activist and as of 2008 a nudist activist.

On November 14, 2012, Taub organized a nude protest at San Francisco City Hall and around the Civic Center to San Francisco's pending passage of Scott Wiener's proposed municipal law to ban unregulated public nudity in the city. She spoke at the November 6, 2012 Board of Supervisors meeting and stripped and was escorted out of the City Hall.[3] The law was enacted and took effect February 1, 2013.[4]

On December 19, 2013, Taub married 20 year old Jaymz Smith on the steps of San Francisco City Hall where she will strip nude in the middle of the ceremony, in defiance of the nudity ban.[5][6][7][8] The couple were charged after the ceremony.[9]

On May 18, 2014, Taub was cited by SF police at the 2014 Bay to Breakers since the San Francisco Chief of Police Greg Suhr decided to declare a ban on nudity at the event.[10]

On October 4, 2014, Taub held a second annual "Nude Olympics" at Baker Beach, San Francisco, consisting of nude jumping, nude races and nude volleyball.[11]

On June 18, 2015, Taub along with activist George Davis settled a lawsuit with the city of San Francisco with a one time payment of $20,0000 to the plaintiffs, who had hoped to overturn the city's 2013 ban on unregulated public nudity.[12][13]

On September 25, 2015, a federal judge ordered San Francisco to issue a parade permit to Taub’s group for another naked march after the city had previously denied their applications.[14]

On September 26, 2015, Taub led a nude parade starting at Jane Warner Plaza at the intersection of Castro and Market Streets.[15]

In December 2015, Taub was characterized as San Francisco's most notable nudist.[1]

On February 13, 2016, Taub led a nude parade called "Valentine’s Nude Love Parade," from Jane Warner Plaza to SF City Hall. She and the "Body Freedom Network" collaborated to obtain a permit.[16][17]

On August 7, 2016, Taub organized a four-hour nude "Summer of Love" event. She gave a speech at Jane Warner Plaza[2] and then led a parade from there up Castro St. and into Divisidero St. and north turning onto Haight St. and beyond the Ashbury St. intersection, then north to the edge of Golden Gate Park panhandle and then back along the same route to the Plaza. This was followed by nude dancing at the Plaza. Her three teen-aged children, a girl and two boys, the oldest born in 2001, appeared for photos and marched nude.[18]

Taub is one of San Francisco's most well-known activist in naturism and "body freedom" of the past decade.

Personal life

Taub lives with her family in Berkeley, California. Taub claims to have visited at least 18 countries. She speaks English and Hungarian as well as her native Russian. She puts her three children through homeschooling.
