Gorka Márquez (born 4 September 1990) is a Spanish dancer and choreographer, best known as a professional dancer on the BBC One dance series Strictly Come Dancing.[1] He has also appeared on live dance show, Burn the Floor.[2]

Early life

Márquez began dancing at the age of 12, representing Spain in the World Latin Championships in 2010, and reaching the semi-finals of the 2012 WDSF World Cup.[3]

Strictly Come Dancing

In 2016, Márquez became a professional in BBC ballroom dancing show, Strictly Come Dancing for its fourteenth series.[4][5] He was partnered with EastEnders actress, Tameka Empson and they were eliminated in week three of the competition. Márquez also danced with Anastacia in the fifth week of the competition, due to Brendan Cole being too ill to dance; they scored a total of 30 for their Quickstep, and were safe from the dance off. Marquez will also dance with Series 12 runner-up Frankie Bridge.

On 19 November, after dancing in the Week 9 edition of the show, from Blackpool, Márquez was attacked in the street by a group of youths and suffered two badly-chipped teeth. On 21 November he underwent restorative dental surgery. The incident was not reported to the police, but Lancashire Constabulary contacted the BBC, to establish the details and allow further investigation.[6]
