Regional profile

Edmonton is by far the most liberal area in Alberta, and is the current base of the provincial NDP and the provincial Liberals. However, it is still more conservative than most other large cities in Canada. The Conservatives currently hold all but one seat here, although in most cases with smaller pluralities than the astronomical margins in rural Alberta.

This is the only area in Alberta where the Liberals have broken through in recent times, having won between two and four seats here from 1993 to 2004, although never by large margins. The four seats the Liberals won in Edmonton in 1993 was the first time they had won a seat anywhere in Alberta since 1968. The Liberals lost all their seats in 2006 as the Conservatives took power back.

In 2008, the Conservative stronghold in Alberta was broken by the New Democratic Party (NDP) in Edmonton-Strathcona, although all other seats remained under Conservative control. The NDP has held this seat ever since. The only other time the NDP won a seat in the region is when it won Edmonton East in 1988. In 2011, the NDP took the second-place spot in all Edmonton-area ridings except Edmonton-Sherwood Park (where they came in third behind the Conservative winner and an independent candidate) and Edmonton-Strathcona (which they won outright by thirteen percentage points).

While the Conservatives have won everything outside of Edmonton-Strathcona in recent elections, their best seats are in the more suburban ridings outside of the city core. Since 2004, their best riding in the region has always been Edmonton—Spruce Grove. In 2011, they won 71% of the vote there. They also won more than 60% of the vote in Edmonton—St. Albert, Edmonton—Leduc and Edmonton—Mill Woods—Beaumont.
