Beep (stylized as beep) is a reloadable contactless smart card aimed to be a replacement for the magnetic card-based system in paying rail based rapid transit transportation fares in and around Metro Manila. Beep is also aimed to be used in lieu of cash in some convenience stores and other businesses. The Beep system is implemented and operated by AF Payments Incorporated, which is primarily owned by Ayala Corporation and Metro Pacific Investments Corporation.
Use
As of June 2016, Beep is accepted at:
- LRT Lines 1 and 2
- MRT Line 3
- Froehlich Tours point-to-point (P2P) Buses
- HM Transport Airport loop buses
- RRCG Transport premium point-to-point (P2P) Buses
- Buses operated by Citylink Coach Services, serving Eastwood City, the Bonifacio Global City and Newport City
- BGC Bus
- CAVITEx
This is aimed to be expanded to eventually cover:
- PNR Metro South Commuter Line
- Other city buses
- Tollways
- Jeepneys
- Convenience stores
Card types
Single Journey
A single journey card costs from ₱13 to ₱30, and can be purchased initially at all LRT and MRT stations.
Stored Value
There is a stored value card for sale that initially costs ₱20 for the card alone. The card has a maximum load limit of ₱10,000 which is valid for 4 years from the date of first purchase of the card. Reloading of the stored value cards will initially be at all LRT and MRT stations, which could then be expanded into several convenience stores and other stores and brands that will participate in the system. Self-service recharge machines are also available at all LRT and MRT stations to add value to the card. Due to its popularity, from 12 October 2015, new stored value Beep Cards quickly ran out of stock, and were replenished later in the following months.
Third-party/add-on cards
Due to the card's increasing popularity, other companies from banks to mobile company are now selling Beep cards with additional features (ie. PayMaya,[2] Globe GCash,[3] BPI Amore, etc..). PayMaya, for an instance can be used as a debit card and transferring funds, can be use for Uber [4] ride or Beep card as well.
History
- January 31, 2014: AF Consortium wins the AFCS project bidding
- March 31, 2014: AF Consortium and the government through the PPP center signs the 10-year concession agreement
- July 20, 2015: First commercial use of the system in the Manila Light Rail Transit System Line 2
- August 16, 2015: First commercial use of the system (Southbound) in the Manila Light Rail Transit System Line 1
- September 20, 2015: Full operation in the Manila Light Rail Transit System Line 1
- October 3, 2015: Commencement of the commercial use of the system in the Manila Metro Rail Transit System
- April 25, 2016 First (Beta) use on P2P (Point-Point) Buses.
