Armageddon expo is a New Zealand owned commercial science fiction and comics convention held in New Zealand in various cities including Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, the company has been running for 20 years. In recent years, it has evolved from a comic and trading card event in 1995 to showcase computer and video gaming, animation, and consumer electronics, alongside comics, wrestling, merchandise and a growing creative community in New Zealand. The convention hosts celebrity guests from popular movies, TV shows and computer games, who give panels, met and greet the public and provide a different atmosphere at each event. The new Zealand cosplay community is also actively participating at most of the armageddon events nationally. The event is a mixture of computer gaming, wrestling, music, anime, sci-fi, fantasy, comics and stalls. Armageddon has become the largest fantasy event in New Zealand with 70,000 attendees at the 2015 Auckland event and over 130,000 attendees attending the shows annually nationwide.

History

Armageddon was first held in Auckland, New Zealand on the weekend of 2 December 1995 at the Avondale Raceway. In 1997, the convention came to Wellington, then Melbourne event was held in 1999; followed by the first Christchurch event held in 2007. The Expo expanded in 2012, with its first expo in Hamilton, but has ceased doing Hamilton in 2015 due to lack of sustainability in that region. Armageddon will be doing a new expo in Manukau South Auckland in 2016.[1]

Contents

Special events that take place at Armageddon include a Dragonball Z kamehameha contest (created in NZ in 2001), Pizza Eating Contest, console gaming, trading card tournaments, Wuss Factor (fear factor style eating contest), Cosplay, movie screenings, and celebrity panels.

Armageddon hosts a variety of stalls run by companies from NZ and internationally, with merchandise including comics, gaming, trading card, anime, steampunk and memorabilia sales. At each event there are numerous NZ comic creators and small press present displaying and selling there wares.
