The lesser ramshorn snail, Anisus vorticulus, is a species of minute, air-breathing, freshwater snail, an aquatic gastropod mollusk in the family Planorbidae, the ramshorn snails.
Distribution
This species is mentioned in annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive.
It occurs in:
- Czech Republic[3] - critically endangered (CR).[4] Its Conservation status in 2004-2006 is bad (U2) in report for European commission in accordance with Habitats Directive.[5]
- England - vulnerable (VU),[6] listed in List of endangered species in the British Isles
- Ireland
- Germany - critically endangered (vom Aussterben bedroht)[7]
- Netherlands[8]
- Poland
- Slovakia[3]
- Latvia
- Croatia - in the Krka National Park. First finding of this species in Craoatia was in 2009.[9]
Habitat
This small snail lives in pools with standing water and in oxbow lakes, but these biotopes are threatened because of sedimentation and ecological succession.[10]
In the Czech Republic this species usually lives in biotopes where there are lots of Lemna trisulca.[10]
Water quality that is suitable for Anisus vorticulus is water without turbidity; with a pH from 7 to 7,5; with calcium from 40 to 400 mg/l and with electrical conductivity from 200 to 1100 mS/m.[10]
