Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (English: Fear Is Foolishness[1]) is a 2016 Indian Tamil-language action-romance film[2] written and directed by Gautham Menon. The film stars Silambarasan and Manjima Mohan in lead roles. Initially titled as Sattendru Maarathu Vaanillai, the film tells the story of a happy-go-lucky young man who is in love. However, in an unexpected turn of events, he and his dear ones are embroiled in a high-risk situation, which demands that he rise to the occasion and stand his ground against the odds.

Principal photography commenced in November 2013,[3] however, in June 2014, filming schedules were postponed until Menon completed his other project Yennai Arindhaal (2015) with Ajith Kumar.[4] Filming recommenced on 21 February 2015, majority of shooting was done in Chennai, India. The film features film score and soundtrack album composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics by Thamarai. It is simultaneously made in Telugu as Sahasam Swasaga Sagipo with Naga Chaitanya and Manjima Mohan in lead roles.[5] The film was released on 11 November 2016 to positive reviews.

Development

"I chose this title because it works for the story. It’s about one’s inner courage or the strength that comes from within you. When a difficult situation arises, which people normally run away from, there is this inner voice which tells you, ‘Don’t be afraid. Take this guy on or this moment on’. This film is about that."

Gautham Vasudev Menon on the title and subject of the film, in an interview with The New Indian Express.[1]

Gautham Menon announced in October 2013 that he would produce and direct a film featuring Silambarasan in the lead role.[6] In an interview with Bangalore Mirror, Menon stated that the film was originally titled Sattendru Maarathu Vaanilai. He described the film as one which starts as a "love story" and then enters a "violent / action space."[2] Silambarasan supported this statement, saying that it will be in a similar genre to Menon's previous films Vettaiyaadu Vilayaadu and Yennai Arindhaal.Menon outlined the storyline of the film, stating, "This film is a feel-good love story and a story of friendship. It is the story of a happy-go-lucky guy (played by Silambarasan) who is looking to do normal things in life but then, a situation is thrown at him and it changes everything." The film story is inspired by the scene in the film The Godfather where a bruised Michael Corleone plots revenge against the corrupt policeman McCluskey.[7] Menon has portrayed cops as heroes but the cop is the antagonist. When he was writing the second half of the film, he ensured not to watch films in the other genre. After he saw the film Angadi Theru, he could not write his film script for two weeks.[7]

In December 2013, A. R. Rahman was officially confirmed to compose the songs. Dhilip Subbarayan was signed on as stunt choreographer. Dan Macarthur was confirmed.[8] Baba Sehgal was chosen to portray a negative role as a cop.[9] Actor Vineeth Srinivasan made Menon watch the trailer of Oru Vadakkan Selfie and then Manjima was auditioned and selected for the role.[10] On her role, she stated: "I play the character of someone, who visits her friend on vacation and meets this guy (character played by Silambarasan). It’s different from the role I played in Oru Vadakkan Selfie. In that, I had to underplay my character."[10] Silambarasan's character in the film is about courage and inner strength.[10]

Filming

While the team was still in the process of casting a female lead opposite Silambarasan, principal photography began in mid-November 2013 with a ten-day schedule in Adyar, Chennai. Scenes featuring Silambarasan and Sathish Krishnan were shot.[11] Later, filming continued for ten days with Pallavi Subhash as the female lead. Further, the shooting progressed during the nights, in and around Kalakshetra and Thiruvanmiyur.[8] A second schedule began in early December 2013 featuring scenes with the lead cast in urban Chennai.[12] The film was shot for thirty days and was put on hold until Menon completed filming Yennai Arindhaal.[4] In 2015, Pallavi Subhash couldn't allot bulk dates to the film and was initially replaced by Manjima Mohan.[13] Filming began from 21 February 2015, reshooting all previous scenes with Manjima Mohan.[13] By September 2015, four songs were filmed and the team was left with 20 days of work.[1] By November 2015, ninety percent of the filming was completed.[13] The next schedule comprised 30 allotted days.[14] On 17 February 2016, the climax portions were being filmed in Adyar, Chennai. However, a stunt made Silambarasan suffer facial injuries, postponing the filming schedules.[15]

A. R. Rahman's inclusion in the project was confirmed by December 2013. As per the urgency of shooting, a single track with lyrics penned by Madhan Karky was recorded within three hours by the composer at his studio in Los Angeles.[17] Recording of the songs recommenced from February 2015.[4] By September 2015, recording of all the five tracks by A. R. Rahman was completed.[1] For the sixth track, Rahman was yet to see the film and score it, which was later on added as the theme music.[1] The music rights were acquired by Divo in 2015.[18]

The soundtrack album has five songs, all placed in the first half of the film.[7] In an interview with The Times of India, Menon confirmed four tracks on the soundtrack album, one being Idhu Naal Varaiyil.[13] The track Avalum Naanum, sung by Vijay Yesudas, was used in the first teaser of the film. "Rasaali" is set in the tunes of 90s.[13]

The fifth track is Thalli Pogathey which features vocals by Sid Sriram. It framed the score for the film's official trailer.[19] The song was recorded in the second week of December 2015.[20] On 31 December 2015, the vocals on the track were fine-tuned.[20][21] According to the singer: "The song is about a guy’s longing to express himself to a girl; but not knowing how to go about it and thus, having an inner conversation with himself."[20] The song has rap-vocals by Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam and backing vocals by Aparna Narayanan.[22] The song Thalli Pogathey instantly became a sensation and went viral. Owing to the popularity of the Thalli Pogathey, Silambarasan recorded and released a cover version of the song on 14 January 2016.[23][24]

The film director released the song titles through his official Twitter handle on 1 March 2016.[25][26]
