The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), ( سوئی ساؤدرن گیس کمپنی) formerly known as Sui Gas Transmission Company Limited, is a Pakistani gas supply company based in Karachi, Pakistan.

History

It was formed in 1955.[1] The company in its present shape was formed on March 30, 1989, following a series of mergers of three pioneering companies, namely Sui Gas Transmission Company Limited, Karachi Gas Company Limited and Indus Gas Company Limited.[4]

Sui Southern Gas Company is Pakistan's leading integrated gas company. The company is engaged in the business of transmission and distribution of natural gas in southern part of Pakistan- mainly in Sindh and Baluchistan.[1] Sui Southern Gas Company transmission system extends from Sui, Balochistan to Karachi, Sindh.

The company also owns and operates the only gas meter manufacturing plant in the country, under an agreement with Schlumberger Industries, France. The Company is listed on the Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad Stock Exchanges.[1] On 11 January 2016, all 3 city stock exchanges merged to form Pakistan Stock Exchange.[5]

Gas Shortfall

As of September 2020, a gas shortfall of 150mmcfd is faced by SSGC.[6]

National Gas Transmission Company (NGTC)

National Gas Transmission Company (NGTC) is planned to be formed. It would operate as a common carrier for the existing/newly formed gas distribution companies as well as under third party access rules/codes promulgated by OGRA. NGTC would not be engaged in the purchase or sale of gas and will only be mandated to transport gas.[7]

Unaccounted for Gas (UfG)

The Unaccounted for Gas (UfG) of Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) is growing exponentially. The UfG has increased to 16 percent of SSGC in financial year 2020-21. The permissible limit of UfG is seven percent.[8]
