Background

Incumbent Democratic mayor Miro Weinberger was first elected in 2012. Weinberger is the first Democrat to serve as mayor of Burlington since Gordon Paquette, who lost reelection to future U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders in 1981.[1] The Progressive Party currently holds an outright majority on the Burlington city council after flipping two seats in the 2020 general election.[2][3] Sam Donnelly, outgoing chair of the Burlington Democratic Party, said that Democrats intended to "play defense" in 2021, focusing on holding the mayorship and the two Democrat-held city council seats up for election rather than attempting to regain their majority.[3]

Both the Democratic Party and the Progressive Party held their primary in the form of a remote caucus, first allowing candidates to deliver speeches via livestream before participants cast their ballots, either online or in-person at select locations.[3]
