Typhoon (Korean singer)

Kim Gyun-woo (born April 8, 1983) better known as Typhoon or Jay Kim, is an American-Korean descent singer and actor. He is a member of South Korean rock band TRAX and he was a member of South Korean ballad group S.M. The Ballad.

Music career

Pre-debut

In 2002, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Junsu, Typhoon, Rose and Attack, the six of them made their first television appearance in a show called Heejun vs. Kangta, Battle of the Century: Pop vs. Rock. Moon Hee-jun taught Typhoon, Rose and Attack on to sing rock while Sungmin, Xiah, and Eunhyuk were taught other singing techniques by Kangta. The six trainees separated a year later, then Typhoon, Rose, and Attack debuted as members of rock band TRAX. The trio separated when Junsu went on to debut as a member of TVXQ.^[1] Then Sungmin and Eunhyuk joined ten other trainees and formed Super Junior 05, the first generation of rotational boy band Super Junior.

TRAX

He then became a lead vocalist for the band TRAX along with three other members Rose, Attack and X-Mas. The band has released a full-length album (Cho-u; 2006) and two mini-albums (Let U Go and Oh! My Goddess, both in 2010) to varying success. In 2010, TRAX became a special guest for Super Junior's third Asian tour, Super Show 3 in some tour dates, performing on the bridge of the song Don't Don.

TRAX released their third EP, Blind on November 10, 2011. They had their comeback stage on M!Countdown on the same day.

SM The Ballad

In November 2010, Kim has participated with SM labelmates Super Junior's Kyuhyun, SHINee's Jonghyun and new member Jino for the ballad project group S.M. the Ballad. The quartet had released a five-track album entitled Neomu Geuriwo (Miss You) on the same month and sold a total of 23,000 copies by the end of 2010 according to the South Korean Gaon charts, being the 66th best-selling Korean-language physical release in South Korea.

Acting career

Drama

Kim has acted in several television dramas. His acting career began in 2010 with his role in MBC's drama, Romance Zero. He then appeared in KBS's drama President (2011) as Yoon Min Ki. In 2012, Kim was cast in a leader role with Jung Eun-chae in KBS's drama, The Women of Our Home.

Musicals

In 2010, he participated in musicals Brothers Were Brave, Rock of Ages and rotated as D'Artagnan with Super Junior's Kyhuhyun, in the The Three Musketeers, alongside label mate The Grace's Dana.^[2] He was cast to act alongside Super Junior's Sungmin in the 2010 KBS drama President. He plays the role of Sungmin's half-brother.

In May 2014, it was officially announced that Kim was to star in the musical Singin' In The Rain as Don Lockwood with Super Junior's Kyuhyun and EXO's Baekhyun. The musical ran from June 5, 2014 until August 3, 2014 at the Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul.

Personal life

Jay enlisted for a 2-year mandatory military service on 26 March 2012. He received four weeks of basic military training in Busan and then continued to serve as a public service worker. He was discharged in 2014.^[3]
