Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahaan was a Hindi television serial that aired on Zee TV in 2003/2004. The show was based on a popular Indian novel November Rain, which was the first Indian novel in English to be made into a daily prime time television series.

Concept

The story revolves around Aryan who loses his girlfriend Muskaan in a road mishap. Blaming himself for her death, he goes into a state of depression and tries all means to get in touch with her but fails.

Then he meets a guru who teaches him how to communicate with the dead through a planchette...a board that sends messages under spiritual guidance. That’s when the action starts which gets spookier as the serial proceeds.

Story

Muskaan is the apple of her parents' eye. She lives in Delhi with her parents, and younger sister. They go to Mumbai to visit relatives and Muskaan ends up staying there to go to Medical School. She meets Aryan and they end up falling in love. Aryan has a friend Monty, who does dark arts and knows how to talk to spirits. One day, when the big punditji is looking at Muskaan's Kundali, he says that it is incomplete. This worries her mom but they don't think much of it. Aryan and Muskaan want to marry each other, and Muskaan tells her parents but right when Aryan is supposed to come visit them, he gets a call that his dad has had a heart attack and has to leave immediately. He tells his best friend to let Muskaan know, and he will be back ASAP but she just tells Muskaan that he's gone. Muskaan, heartbroken, agrees to marry some other guy. On the wedding day, Aryan convinces Muskaan to run away with her and they flee on his bike. They meet with an accident: Aryan is injured but Muskaan loses her life. Aryan is depressed and can't do much. He convinces Monty to help him talk to Muskaan. So they do and Muskaan tells him to move on, that she is gone. But Aryan tells her she can't because he can't move on. Emotional, she vows to return for him. She gives him a clue that she will be born in 13 months, on December 2 in Omkareshwar, and that he will get a clue about where soon. She throws yellow flowers at him and by chance he finds a painting of a house with yellow flowers in Omkareshwar.

He is happy and everyone is surprised but happy that he is happy. 13 months later, he goes to the house in Omkareshwar and an old couple live there. He asks them if there was a girl born here and they tell him no, and to go away. Dejected he leaves. A couple comes to visit the old couple, asking for forgiveness. It's their daughter and son in law and the daughter is obviously very pregnant. She gives birth that night. When they are trying to find a name for her, punditji says it should start with M or K. The mother likes Muskaan or Khushi as the name, so they name her Khushi.

Khushi lives in Omkareshwar at her grandparents house, with her Nanaji and mother after her dad shifts to Australia for work. Meanwhile, Aryan falls into depression after Muskaan's demise. Aryan's parents, who are worried about his future fix his marriage with Shweta(Urvashi Dholakia). Aryan eventually gets engaged to her. When a toddler Khushi finds out about Aryan's fiance Shweta, she kills her in a car accident. Aryan is shattered and starts to think that marriage is not for him. He spends all his time working in the hospital.

Five years pass and Khushi is a little girl-Aryan is still unable to forget Muskaan and blames himself for her death. He is always in an irritable mood and refuses to socialise with anyone. Khushi's mother,Vrinda, decides to relocate from Omkareshwar- and shifts to Mumbai with her father (Satyen Kappu) and daughter Khushi after Khushi's grandmother dies. At the train station, Khushi collides with Shaliniji(Aruna Irani) and Neelu, and unconsciously, they get attracted to her. In Mumbai, they live with Vrinda's brother, Vishmohan and his family. Vishmohan's wife, Revati, possesses a strong dislike for Vrinda, Nanaji and Khushi because of their middle class background. Vishmohan and Aryan's family have good business relations. Meanwhile, Sumitra's sister, Durga returns to Mumbai to visit her. She is Aryan's childhood friend and is shocked to see drastic changes in his behaviour. She tries her best to take him away from depression, and succeeds. Aryan eventually falls in love with her, and they decide to get married. Meanwhile, Nanaji notices Khushi's odd behaviour and confides in his best friend Parikshit, who doesn't believe him at first. However, after noticing some strange incidents taking place (Khushi drawing Kalima, going missing in the middle of the night etc;), Parikshit, too, gets worried about Khushi. Aryan and Durga get married, much to Khushi's dismay. She tries to make use of her stronger senses to kill Durga and put her in dangerous situations (encounter with fire, snake etc;) Upon noticing such mishaps taking place,Sumitra decides to keep Aryan and Durga away from each other. She seeks help from Guruma. Obeying Guruma's orders, Sumitra explains to Durga that she has to stay away from Aryan for 40 days if not his life will be in danger. Durga heeds Sumitra's advice and starts distancing herself from Aryan. This causes a rift in their relationship. Despite the rift, they go for their honeymoon. Sumitra prevents them from getting close. Meanwhile, Parikshit takes Khushi to Guruma and requests for help regarding Khushi's odd behaviour. Khushi and Guruma end up not meeting each other- but Guruma feels Khushi's presence and realizes that Khushi has a shakti(power) in her, if it somehow transfers to Guruma, she will be more powerful than ever. Guruma desperately starts searching for the power but never collides with Khushi. After failing miserably many times while trying to kill Durga, Khushi gives up, and goes to the temple to see Guruji and seeks solace, in a helpless and miserable state. Guruji tries to explain why her efforts are going futile, and also talks about her past life. Parikshit overhears the entire conversation, much to his disbelief, and tries to warn his best friend about Khushi. He is the first one to know that Khushi is indeed,Muskaan. However, Khushi soon finds out that Parikshit knows the truth, and tries to put his life in danger. Parikshit slips from the roof and falls- he doesn't die at this point, but becomes completely paralyzed. He writes about Khushi's truth in a diary (which never reached his best friend). Meanwhile, Durga comes to know that Sumitra had lied to her about Aryan, and decides to patch up with Aryan and disobey her instead. Just when they are about to reconcile, Khushi kills Durga in a car accident and succeeds this time. Aryan’s family members mourn over Durga's death-while Aryan is left completely devastated.

However, the image of her true identity become unclear-she sees Aryan in a very blurry vision. Khushi doesn't know why she keeps having nightmares. Aryan is still depressed over Durga's death. Khushi goes to Aryan's house for a party, and encounters Akash- who is now Devika(Guruji's niece's) fiancé. Her hands collide with his, and in a vision she sees a man in coat hanging a body to a tree. Khushi tries to trace this person, and even tells her Manna(Vrinda) that a murder is going to take place in the area soon. Manna chides her at first. However, when the murder really takes place-everyone is shocked. Akash, who's the culprit, finds out that the police is looking for the murderer and decides to escape. He also gets to know that Khushi is on a lookout for him, and decides to kill her. He puts Khushi's life in danger, and she gets nightmares of someone stabbing her with a knife. Still unaware that it is Akash, she tries to find out who is trying to harm her. Meanwhile, Neelu and Vishal want to get married. Vishal's mother, Revati, wants him to marry Diya(Aryan's sister) because she's from a wealthy background. No one is aware of Neelu and Vishal's relationship except Khushi. Preparations for Diya and Vishal's wedding begin- on the other hand, Neelu finds out that she is pregnant with Vishal's child. But that doesn't stop the marriage from taking place- Diya and Vishal eventually get married, while Neelu aborts the child. At Vishal's wedding, a mysterious woman in veil stands beside Aryan, Aryan's parents get suspicious and ask him who the lady standing next to him is-she introduces herself as Durga, which stuns everyone in the room. They don't believe her at first, and decide to put her through several identity tests. Durga counters all tests and convinces everyone that she is not faking her identity. Neelu is devastated because Vishal made no effort towards their relationship, she decides to end her life by committing suicide from an abandoned building- but Khushi, who already knew about this, was present on site to save her life . Khushi decides to move to a boarding school in Ooty, because she feels that her life is in danger. Akash finds out about this and takes up a case in Ooty, which coincidentally happens to be in Khushi's boarding school. While adjusting into her new boarding school, Khushi sees flashbacks of Muskaan and desperately looks for answers. Through her trips and adventures in boarding school, Khushi encounters bodies of dead people and sees their spirit-soon she realizes that she can communicate with the decease. Guruma enters the boarding school as the head nun. Akash tries to kill Khushi, but fails when she traumatizes him and almost pushes him towards death. Akash gets a bad trauma, and realizes that Khushi is Muskaan. It is then revealed that Akash was the one behind Muskaan's death. He killed Muskaan because she broke off her marriage with him for Aryan. Everyone is shocked to find out the truth. Akash permanently remains in the mental hospital-and his engagement with Devika breaks off in that process. As things slowly begin to change for the better, Aryan and Durga visit Guruji and pray to conceive. There, Durga meets Khushi and Khushi assures Durga that she will have a baby soon. When reports reveal that Durga is pregnant, she is thankful towards Khushi and tells Aryan that her prayers got answered because of a “girl she met in the temple”. Khushi tries to look for answers with regards to her true identity-she visits the temple and reaches out for the bell-ringing it several times while Guruji watches over her, asking Kalima what will happen next.

The car collides and crashes into a tree and Khushi’s friend swings out and dies. When Manna receives this news, she tells Khushi to return to Mumbai, however, Khushi remains adamant. Khushi visits Nanaji at Omkareshwar before heading to Mumbai. In Mumbai, Khushi joins an architectural firm along with her friends and her seniors talk about an upcoming project- which turns out to be the Kalima temple Khushi visited with Aryan. Khushi vaguely remembers the temple. When she visits the temple on her own, she gets faint visions of Aryan. Meanwhile, Aryan and Durga are happy and well-settled with their daughter, Shraddha. Khushi is sick of the games her mind keeps playing on her, and one day, she goes back to the kalima temple and asks God to reveal her purpose on earth. Just then, temple floor starts shaking vigorously, causing a crack on the surface. Khushi suddenly gets flashbacks of Aryan and her, and fully remembers her past. She then realizes that she is indeed, Muskaan, who was brought back to earth to reunite with Aryan. When Durga and Aryan visit the temple in Omkareshwar, Khushi follows . She catches Aryan when he is alone and tries to make him believe that she is Muskaan. Aryan gets a shock and does not trust her at first, until she talks about how they were about to get married, and met with an accident-very descriptively. Khushi, aka Muskaan is crazy about Aryan and refuses to leave him. Aryan explains to her that he has moved on in life and cannot leave Durga. But this doesn’t stop Khushi from meeting him.Eventually, Shaliniji, Neelu and everyone in the family, get to know that Khushi is Muskaan. After being paralytic for years, Parikshit dies in the hospital. His spirit haunts Khushi, and constantly bugs her.He taunts that Khushi will never be able to achieve Aryan, and she will always remain unhappy in life. Khushi professes her love to Aryan and tells him that she will wait at the same kalima temple as a bride to marry him. When Aryan arrives at the temple, he explains to Khushi that he cannot marry her as he loves Durga and cannot leave her. This breaks Khushi’s heart. Khushi falls into depression, and her friends, including Dhruv tries to console her. They go to the park together, where Khushi encounters a snake and it bites her. She is then driven by a negative force, which turns her into a completely evil and heartless person. She vows to destroy Durga’s life. Durga eventually finds out that Khushi is Muskaan, and tries to keep her away from Aryan. However, her efforts go to waste when Khushi conspires against Durga. She tries to poison Durga’s drink during a party, and make false accusations that Durga is trying to kill her. Aryan starts believing Khushi instead, but Sumitra knows that Khushi is playing games. In order to repair her relationship, Durga decides to go on a holiday with Aryan and Shraddha. She lives in a bungalow house that is haunted. The bungalow belonged to an old couple, who was murdered. It is then revealed that one of Aryan’s business partners killed the couple to attain the property. However, when the business partner finds out that Durga knows the truth and tries to kill her, he gets knocked down by Durga’s car and dies immediately. With the help of Khushi, who pretends to be nice to Durga, they try to bury the body. However, Khushi frames Durga and gets her arrested by the police. Everyone is shocked to know that Durga committed the murder. Khushi assures Durga that she is innocent, and will get bailed soon. However, during the court hearing, Khushi turns the story and makes it seem like Durga was the culprit. Hence, Durga gets sentenced to life imprisonment. She then realizes that Khushi was the mastermind behind the entire fiasco. Khushi begs Aryan to marry her and divorce Durga. He gets compelled to break his relationship with Durga and marry Khushi. This shatters Durga. Aryan develops hatred for Khushi and tells her that he will never be able to love her the way he loves Durga. A heartbroken Durga meets a dangerous long term prisoner in jail-she turns out to be Guruma. Guruma helps Durga escape from prison, through black magic. An outdoor construction, where Durga is supposed to pick rocks from, suddenly upheavals. Durga is predicted dead. Khushi feels relieved knowing that Durga is absent from Aryan’s life. However, she encounters Durga’s spirit torturing her mind. Aryan and Khushi consummate, as Khushi believes that Aryan loves her once again.

Durga tries to expose Khushi and succeeds. Aryan and his family finally realize that Khushi was the mastermind behind Durga’s jail sentence and Aryan decides to sever all ties from Khushi. It is also revealed that Durga did not die while picking rocks; she faked her death to take revenge from Khushi.

Aryan and Durga get back together. They express love for one another. Aryan’s mother tells them to remarry to avoid evil eye from casting their relationship again. During the ceremony, Khushi meets Aryan and tells him that she is pregnant with his child. A shocked and confused Aryan then decides to let this remain a secret. Coincidentally, Durga also becomes pregnant the same time as Khushi. Khushi decides to end Durga’s life, as she believes that because of Durga her relationship with Aryan tumbled. She sets a car on fire, but ends up killing Aryan instead. Devastated, she curses herself and vows to bring up Aryan’s child with pride and dignity when he is born. During both Durga and Khushi’s delivery, Guruma swaps the newborns.

The evil newborn, who is supposedly Khushi’s child, tortures Guruji’s niece Devika when she finds out the truth about his evil spirit. That leaves her in a traumatic state-and permanently hospitalized for three years. Khushi’s newborn, who is evil with a demonic nature, grows up with Durga, while Durga’s newborn, who is pure-spirited and holy, grows up with Khushi. Khushi names her son Maahir, while Durga names her son Timir –as per Guruji’s instructions. As kids, Maahir and Timir encounter each other countless times, and Timir tries to destroy him. Maahir tries to comfort Devika and lift her from the trauma. He succeeds and Devika heals after three years. Timir creates a voodoo doll out of a cloth doll, and Durga gets terrified when she sees it hanging in Timir’s room. As Timir transitions from a newborn to a little boy, he kills three people. Timir is under Guruma’s shadow, and she supports him fully. He gets redirected to kill Durga, and waits for the perfect opportunity. Meanwhile, Guruji’s superior pundits look for Timir, because they know he is a demonic spirit disguised as a child. However, Guruma sends her main lady to protect Timir, which in return gives him more power to do evil things. Despite getting an opportunity to kidnap Timir, the pundits remain unsuccessful warding off his evil spirit. Maahir and Timir study in the same school and possess hatred for each other. Timir tries to kill Maahir, while Maahir, continuously depends on prayers and good karma for protection. Durga seeks help from Guruma with regards to Timir’s daunting nature. Guruma makes use of this opportunity to assist Timir in his evil doings. She stays over at Durga’s place. And sends her main lady to Khushi’s place-to kill Maahir and keep a lookout.

Timir tries to torture Aryan’s mother when she finds out that he is evil spirited. She keeps her lips sealed when he threatens to kill her if she exposes his truth. Shaliniji and Vrindaji find out the truth about Timir being Khushi’s child-but after looking at how she has reformed being under Maahir’s influence, they decide to keep quiet. Durga finds out that Maahir is Aryan and Khushi’s child. She becomes devastated after knowing that Aryan got close to Khushi.

After Shraddha gets hospitalized, the doctor makes an effort to check up on her time and again. Shraddha’s doctor, Ritvik visits her at home once she recovers to make sure she is keeping well. Meanwhile, Dhruv visits Maahir and Khushi. Ritvik tries to win over Durga’s heart and confesses his love for her in a party. Dhruv does the same. Ritvik and Dhruv tell Durga and Khushi to marry them respectively. Despite not being able to forget Aryan, both Khushi and Durga agree for the sake of their children’s happiness. Maahir warns Durga about Ritvik, but she fails to understand his gestures. Ritvik turns out to be a scam doctor, who was appointed by Guruma to assist in killing Durga. Ritvik tells Durga his sob story, about how his wife passed away and he has been lonely ever since. He gains sympathy and succeeds. He shows her a picture of his so-called deceased wife, and she believes him. However, during a new year’s party, she sees the girl as one of the main dancers. It lifts her suspicions and upon further discovery, she realizes that the girl Ritvik showed her was a bar dancer/actress he hired-who didn’t receive her full payment for pretending to be his dead wife.

During the wedding day, Durga exposes Ritvik, and he leaves. Guruma is furious after knowing that Ritvik didn’t succeed at killing Durga. Meanwhile, just like Durga and Ritvik, Khushi and Dhruv are about to get married. However, during an architectural project, Dhruv discovers a mummy at the construction site, which turns out to be a child mummy. He finds out that the mummy belongs to none other than Timir! Timir kills Dhruv- and dumps his dead body somewhere untraceable. After a failed attempt with Ritvik, Guruma decides to unveil that one last “powerful weapon” she kept in her den. That “weapon” or pawn turns out to be Aryan! It is revealed that Aryan survived the car accident and was undertaken by Guruma, who kept him with her in the den for 7 years because he lost his memory. She takes advantage of his memory loss by turning him against Durga and making it seem like Durga was the reason for the accident. A lost Aryan believes her, and starts plotting against Durga. He comes in front of Durga’s car, and she’s overwhelmed to see him. While visiting Nanaji at the hospital, Maahir walks into Aryan’s room and Khushi follows. She is shocked to see Aryan, alive and healthy. Aryan pretends to favour Durga, and they patch up. This breaks Khushi’s heart. Aryan attempts to kill Durga, but stops himself each time. He speaks to Khushi on the phone and tells her that he wants to meet her. Khushi tells Aryan to meet him, and brings Maahir along. Aryan’s heart melts upon looking at Maahir. Just then, Durga arrives and demands Aryan to choose between her and Khushi. Aryan ends up choosing Khushi and Maahir. This leaves Durga in disbelief. He lives with Khushi, but Khushi is unconvinced that Aryan still loves her. After seeing that Aryan is incapable of killing Durga, Guruma looks for an alternative. While stuck in traffic, she comes across Aryan’s look alike-who is a dangerous convict. She plots a massive plan, first by releasing Aryan’s look alike from jail and then by giving him information about Aryan. She tells him to pretend to be Aryan in front of Durga. Aryan’s look-alike agrees, and he enters Aryan’s house, completely in character. He tries to kill Durga, but misses the opportunity each time. He slowly starts getting attracted to Durga and sympathizes with her situation. He then tells Guruma that he might not be able to kill her. During karva chauth, it is revealed that the man Durga was living with is not the actual Aryan. Durga and Khushi are shocked upon knowing this. In an accident, the real Aryan and fake Aryan get badly injured. One of them dies. Guruma visits the hospital to find out which one died. But “Aryan” decides to keep her in the dark.

During the final battle, Maahir and Timir vow to destroy each other. Maahir manages to counter attack Timir, and leaves him hanging from a rock. Just then, Khushi arrives and tries to push Timir, so that he falls to death. She exclaims that if Timir survives, he’ll kill Maahir-and she won’t be able to bear the pain of Maahir’s death. Durga begs Khushi to save Timir. However, Shaliniji and Vrindaji arrive just in time and reveal the truth about Timir being Khushi’s child and Maahir, Durga’s. Khushi and Durga realize that they had been under the wing of each other’s children despite having their own differences. Timir, however, loses the battle with his fate, and dies in the end. A few months pass, Guruma is now helpless, powerless and completely disheveled from her endless battle.

Khushi requests Durga to let Maahir stay with her. Durga agrees, while Aryan, Durga and Shraddha reunite. Before parting with each other, Aryan decides to meet Khushi for one last time. During the final meet up, Maahir senses that Durga’s life is in danger. He tells Khushi to “help him save his mother.” Khushi decides to do a good deed and accepts Maahir’s request. A mentally ill Guruma attempts to put Durga in danger by causing an accident- similar to the one which Durga was part of when she was trying to escape from jail. Aryan tries to save Durga on his motorbike, while Khushi sits behind as a pillion rider, she recalls the first time they sat on the bike-which was when they ran away to get married-but fate played a cruel game and separated them forever. She smiles to herself, and mutters how lucky she had been to be with Aryan, and now she is going to save his wife, Durga. Aryan manages to save Durga from the accident, and as the rocks tumble down, Khushi tries to save Aryan. In an attempt to do so, she gets run over by the heavy rock. As she lies on Aryan’s lap seconds before her death, she mutters that love is an emotion, which cannot be forced upon anyone and that she tried to win Aryan over by force. She came back on earth for him, to be with him, but he only belongs to Durga. She whispers “Tum Bin Jaoon Kahaan” under her breath and dies - with the ending credits showing flashbacks of Muskaan reincarnating as Khushi.
