The Gambia competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's eighth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics.
Four Gambian athletes, three men and one woman, were selected to the team for the Games, competing only in athletics, judo, and swimming (the last two sports signifying the nation's Olympic debut).[2] Sprinter Gina Bass, the only female on the team, acted as Gambia's flag bearer in the opening ceremony.[1] The Gambia, however, has yet to win its first Olympic medal.
Athletics (track and field)
Gambian athletes have so far achieved qualifying standards in the following athletics events (up to a maximum of 3 athletes in each event):[3][4]

Judo
The Gambia has qualified one judoka for the men's lightweight category (73 kg) at the Games, signifying the nation's Olympic debut in the sport. Faye Njie earned a continental quota spot from the African region as the only Gambian judoka in the IJF World Ranking List of May 30, 2016.[5][6]

Swimming
The Gambia has received a Universality invitation from FINA to send a male swimmer for the first time to the Olympics.[7][8]
