Scott Michael Ryan (born 12 May 1973) is an Australian politician. He has been a Senator representing the state of Victoria for the Liberal Party of Australia since the 2007 federal election. Following the 2013 federal election that resulted in the formation of the Abbott Ministry, Ryan was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education;[1] later expanded as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education and Training.[2] On 18 February 2016 Ryan was sworn in as the Minister for Vocational Education and Skills following a rearrangement in the First Turnbull Ministry.[3][4]

Biography

Ryan was born on 12 May 1973 in Brisbane, Queensland,[5] and grew up in Essendon, Victoria.[5] He was educated at St Kevin's College, Melbourne[5] and graduated from the University of Melbourne, with a Bachelor of Arts.[5] While at university, he served as President of the Melbourne University Liberal Club and was a member of the Australian Liberal Students' Federation, where he is a life member.[6]

He started his career as a tutor of political science at St Mary's College, a constituent college of the University of Melbourne.[5] He then worked in corporate affairs for pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.[7][8] He also worked as a speechwriter and political advisor.[5] In 2008, he was a Research Fellow at the Institute of Public Affairs in Melbourne.[5]

He was a member of the executive of the Victorian Division of the Liberal Party, holding the office of Vice President.[5] He has been a Liberal member of the Australian Senate since July 2008, representing the state of Victoria.[5] He was elected to serve a six-year term in the Senate at the 2007 federal election, after being preselected in the third position on the Coalition ticket in Victoria.[5]

Personal life

He is married to Helen.[5] They have a son and reside in Melbourne.[5]
