Rushcliffe School (formerly Rushcliffe Comprehensive School) is a secondary school with academy status in the Rushcliffe district of Nottinghamshire and is situated on Boundary Road in West Bridgford, one of the wealthiest areas in the county. It is ranked regularly in the top 100 comprehensive schools in the UK for GCSE results and is in the top 2% of UK comprehensives for A Level Results. The School's recognised as Outstanding by Ofsted in all categories.

In late 2015 Rushcliffe School became the 26th school in The UK to earn the World Class Schools Quality Mark, and is the first school in the East Midlands and North of England to win this accolade.^[1]

History

It opened in September 1969. The local education area was re-organised and the Rushcliffe Boys' Technical Grammar School and Rushcliffe Girls' Technical Grammar School, both on Boundary Road since 1961, merged.

In April 2011, Rushcliffe School adopted Foundation Status. The school became an academy in August 2012.

In March 2014, Rushcliffe School was awarded an Outstanding grading for all categories in a recent Ofsted Inspection.

It is part of the "Trent Academies group" alongside Arnold Hill Academy and The Farnborough Academy

Identity

The Colours are Red, Black and Silver and are found not only on the uniform but around the building itself.

The School's motto is "Constantia et labore" meaning consistency and effort. This is reflected in the concept of "The Rushcliffe Way" which states the values the school holds, all students are expected to know it. The schools ethos is that "everyone at Rushcliffe school will be given the chance to shine brightly"

Song

The school song was written to reflect the schools vision and ethos and is sung on special occasions such as sports days:

"Let the fire and our passion burn bright,

we have a vision that we feel is right,

we must be sure that we know, that wherever we go,

we let the fire and our passion burn bright"

Admissions

The school has a specialism in science and is a training school. It admits pupils from eleven to eighteen, but due to its popularity, places are oversubscribed. Pupils from primary schools in Ruddington, West Bridgford, Gamston and Edwalton usually go to the school.

Facilities

The facilities are considered very good compared to most secondary school standards. It has two sports halls, 2 halls (A & B) and a 5-acre (20,000 m²) field. On top of this it is situated on the same site as Rushcliffe Leisure Centre giving students access to a swimming pool, gym, and badminton court facilities (These Facilities are used by the public) There is also a new dining hall which the pupils named EATZ. It was opened by Nottingham Forest player Guy Moussi and the mayor of Rushcliffe.

Boundary Road on which it is situated connects Loughborough Road (A60) to Melton Road (A606), and is in the far south of the West Bridgford area. Rushcliffe Leisure Centre is part of the school. Most swimming pools in the Rushcliffe district are jointly run with schools (similar to other districts of Nottinghamshire). The East Midlands Gymnastic and Sports Acrobatics Centre is also part of the leisure centre. The school has eight computer rooms.

In 2013 plans for a new Sixth Form block were approved. Building started in mid 2014 and was completed in the summer of 2015.^[2]

Sport

Although the school specialises in Science, it has had sporting success; mainly due to its location. In 2014 the School was recognised as Nottinghamshire Sports School of the year. Current pupils who are achieving in their chosen sporting field are celebrated on the walls of the PE department.

Gymnastics - Due to the renowned Notts Gymnastics Academy^[3] being based within the Leisure Centre, many Rushcliffe pupils have thrived in the sport. Olympians Becky Downie (2014 European and Commonwealth Games champion on uneven bars), Sam Oldham (Olympic Bronze medallist) are former students, as well as Ellie Downie (Sky Sports's Sportswoman of the Month for April 2015 and the 2015 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year).
Watersports - Rushcliffe school is one of nine "watersport hub schools"^[4] in the UK and produces many high achieving Kayakers, canoeists and rowers, due to much of the catchment area being in close proximity to Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre and Boating clubs on The River Trent. As of 2015, Rushcliffe School pupils make up 20% of England Junior Canoe Slalom team due to British Canoeing working in close partnership with the school.^[5]
Athletics - 2 Rushcliffe pupils came away with Golds for the East Midlands team in the 2014 Sainsbury's School Games; one In the Inter Boys Pole Valt and the other in the Girls 200m.^[6]

Sports day takes place every July with students representing their form. Each Year group are given a continent and each form then compete as individual countries in that continent.

Rushcliffe have great quality Rugby, football and Hockey fields, as well as boating Tennis and Netball courts.

Sixth Form

Rushcliffe has a successful Sixth Form Centre, with As and A2 results coming far above the national average. Around 80% of all Sixth students go to University the year after leaving; 33% to the competitive Russell Group Universities.

The Sixth Form used to be based in the Leisure Centre, and the common room was a sectioned off building on the playing fields. In summer 2015 Rushcliffe opened its £3 million Sixth Form Block;^[7] complete with classrooms, a new ICT study suite, quiet study areas and a large common room with a private Cafe.

Sixth Form wear no School uniform. Unlike many others in the area, students are not required to dress in "office wear", but are expected to dress in smart casual clothes.

Pupillary Responsibility

As of 2011, the school introduced a Head Boy and Girl system, as well as deputies and prefects; all coming from and voted for by the Sixth form, but are expected to represent the whole school. All former head boys and girls have, or are currently, studying at Russell Groups (including Oxbridge) in academic areas including dentistry, biomedicine and law.
