Rupesh Paul

Rupesh Paul is an Indian film director, screenwriter known for his works in international cinema, and Mollywood.^[1][2] He has directed films such as Kamasutra 3D (2015), Saint Dracula 3D (2012), My Mother's Laptop (2008), You Can't Step Twice Into the Same River (2008), Mrigam (2010), Pithavum Kanyakayum (2010), and What The F (2013).^[3] The Temptation Between My Legs (2008).^[4]

He is also the CEO and founder of the Film Production House: Rupesh Paul Productions Limited. The next feature he will be directing is The Vanishing Act ^[5] which is based on the mysterious disappearance of the Malaysian Flight MH370 which recently gained much media attention.^[6][7][7]

Early life

Rupesh was born at Cherthala in Alappuzha district, Kerala, the son of M.C. Paul, an engineer and Rita Paul, a lecturer. Rupesh completed his elementary education from Thrissur and graduated from the University of Madras in Computer Engineering in 2001.^[8] He started writing poetry at the age of ten.

His first anthology of poems in Malayalam, Penkutty Oru Raashtramannu (“A Girl, a Nation it is”)^[9] published by DC Books won the ‘Changampuzha Award for the Best Young Poet’ in 1988. Later, he won the 1998 Mathrubhumi Kavitha Puraskaram. At the age of 22, he joined as a Sub-Editor with Malayala Manoram and later served as a Senior Correspondent with India Today.

Rupesh is married to Indu Menon. They have a daughter and a son.^[10]

Career

In 2008 he made his first two short films were The Temptation Between My Legs,^[11] and One Cannot Step into Same River Twice. The earlier was denied the Censor Board Certificate, while the latter was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and the Florence Film Festival in 2010 thus receiving international attention. Rupesh Paul then directed a Malayalam movie, Laptop/ My Mother's laptop (2008) starring Suresh Gopi, Shweta Menon, Urmila Unni and Padmapriya,^[11] based on a short story by Subhash Chandran. In 2010, he directed three short films, Mrigam (The Beast), Pithavum Kanyakayum (Daddy, You Bastard) and Kanni(The Virgin).

In 2011, Rupesh wrote and directed his first international feature film, The Secret Diaries of Monalisa. The movie was shot in the UK, Italy and France. Rupesh developed his short story, "Drakulayude Ezhamathe Vadhu" into a novel and later into a movie, Saint Dracula 3D (2011). Produced by BizTV Network, the movie was made in the UK with a British cast.^[12] The film was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012.^[13]

Rupesh Paul Productions (RPPL) is a Film Trailer Production Company cum PR Agency founded in 2012 by Director Rupesh Paul.^[14]

Kamasutra 3D

RPPL produced its first movie Kamasutra 3D. Rupesh Paul wrote and directed the movie.^[15] in 2013.

The movie starred Milind Gunaji and Sherlyn Chopra, the latter opted out after being asked about the movie in 2016.^[16] is a periodic movie based on the ancient Indian treatise Kamasutra. Inspired by the historic text of the same name by Vatsyayana ^[17] King Mal Khan, Maleena Khan and Makarand Deshpande also star in the feature.^{[18][19][20][21]} The feature will be released in both 2D and 3D versions worldwide.^[22][23]

Rupesh Paul said:"3D appears the best format to portray classic erotica, but it was hardly experimented till recently. It had remained as a tool to give the biggest jolt in horror movies. Nobody predicted that the Chinese stereoscopic porn would be a major hit. In fact, it out grossed 3D film Avatar. In the film, we are trying to give an extra dimension to the sexual positions described in the ancient treatise on the art of love." Later in June 2016 he went against this and stated: "My film was mistaken as an erotica but it is a war film." ^[24]

The Vanishing Act

After the mysterious disappearance of the Malaysian flight MH370, director Rupesh Paul announced the making of a psychological thriller drama feature film called The Vanishing Act. The movie would be a completely fictional narrative of what led to the flight's disappearance. A teaser of The Vanishing Act was previewed at the Cannes Film Festival 2014 which attracted a lot of media attention.^[25][26][27]

The Vanishing Act courted controversy because of the subject matter. The trailer of The Vanishing Act unveiled at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, created controversy with its subject matter of the Missing Malaysian plane MH 370.^[28] Defending the movie, Rupesh Paul said that movie though inspired by real life events wasn't cashing in on MH 370^[6] The producers then apologised and changed the story. The love angle of the storyline was removed and made into a psychological thriller. It is currently in pre-production.

Upcoming projects

At the 2014 Cannes Film Festival Rupesh Paul Productions announced more projects. Rupesh Paul Productions Limited has currently more than four feature films underway in different stages of development.

• 36 MM 3D is a biopic on Hollywood actress, Marilyn Monroe.
• Monologues of a Sex Maniac deals with a boy feeling lost in a sexually resurgent India.
• Savita Barbie is about two warring gangs set in Mumbai’s underworld.

In January 2014 producers hired Paul to direct NaMo, a film loosely based on Narendra Modi.^[29] As of May 2014 Victor Banerjee is expected to play the lead role in the movie.^[30] The movie is based on the real story of the life of the current Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi. This would be the first 4D movie in India.^[31][32]
