Kamasutra 3D was in the contention list of the 86th Academy Awards of 2013, with selection in the three categories – Best Motion Picture, Original Score and Original Song. The results were announced on 16 December 2013 by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on its official website.[5][6][7][8]

Production

Development

Kamasutra 3D is produced under the house of Rupesh Paul Productions Limited and presented by G J Entertainments. The story has been written by the director. The film is co-produced and designed by Sohan Roy, and Dr George John is the executive producer.[9]

The film was announced at Cannes Film Festival 2012, by Rupesh Paul- the director of the film, after the premiere of his movie, Saint Dracula 3D, at the festival.[10] The first look of Kamasutra 3D, was unveiled at NFDC's film bazaar on 22 November 2012 which was held on the sidelines of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2012 in Goa.[11] The Kamasutra 3D – Photo Shoot Video with Sherlyn Chopra was revealed on 19 January 2013.[12]

Rupesh Paul said:"3D appears the best format to portray classic erotica, but it was hardly experimented till recently. It had remained as a tool to give the biggest jolt in horror movies. Nobody predicted that the Chinese stereoscopic porn would be a major hit. In fact, it out grossed 3D film Avatar. In the film, we are trying to give an extra dimension to the sexual positions described in the ancient treatise on the art of love." Later in June 2016 he went against this and stated: "My film was mistaken as an erotica but it is a war film." [13]

After actress Sherlyn Chopra stated in August 2016 not to be related with the movie, there has been no information about replacement.[14]

Soundtrack

Kamasutra 3D is the only Indian film with five songs to be selected in the Original Song contention category for the 86th Academy Awards. The songs include – Aygiri Nandini, Saawariya, I Felt, Of Soil and Har Har Mahadeva – composed by Chennai based music directors, Saachin & Sreejith while its lyrics were written by Rupesh Paul and Pratyush Prakash.[15][16][17][18]

Cast

Controversy

The director Rupesh Paul decided to replace Sherlyn Chopra, after Chopra uploaded a video clip of the photo shoot of the film on her YouTube channel without seeking his permission. He decided to replace her with Eva Longoria or Mila Kunis.[20] Chopra later apologised to him in writing, stating that she would not say or write anything about the film without the consent of the producers.[21]

On 9 February 2014, Paul filed a lawsuit against Chopra for defamation, alleging that the actress had abused him on the social networking service Twitter.[22] On 22 February Paul filed another complaint against Chopra, seeking anticipatory bail.[23]

By March 2014, however, both parties dropped the lawsuits, publicly stating that they had decided to move on from the misunderstanding.[24]

In June 2016 Chopra after being asked about the movie after a long period of silence, told the media that she wasn't involved with movie. Stating that it was 'not her film' and wishing the team well. [25]
