Re: Woyzeck is a one-act play written by Jeremy Gable. It is a loose adaptation of Georg Buchner's unfinished play Woyzeck.
The play centers around Franz Woyzeck, a modern-day soldier, who stands accused of killing his wife Marie. The evidence used against him is a widely circulated video of him holding a knife while standing over a bleeding Marie. Woyzeck talks directly to the audience as he explores several reasons why he would have committed such an act. The motives include oppression by his superiors, exploitation by the medical profession, Marie's infidelity and a lack of religious faith. Throughout the play, Woyzeck's friends, family, employers and even Buchner himself make comments about Franz.
The play explores modern society's obsession with murder, while exploring modern military practices, the medical profession, religious doctrines and the constant surveillance provided by video phones and video sharing sites such as YouTube.
The play premiered in June 2007 at the Hunger Artists Theatre in Fullerton, CA. The play received critical acclaim as one of the best new plays of the year in Orange County.[1] It was considered for the Pulitzer Prize for drama, but was not awarded the prize.
