Polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the PIGR gene.[3] It is a Fc receptor which facilitates the secretion of the soluble polymeric isoforms of immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin M.

Function

pIgR is expressed on several glandular epithelia including those of liver and breast. It mediates transcellular transport of polymeric immunoglobulin molecules. It is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily.[3][4]

Structure

The receptor has five domians with homology to the immunoglobulin fold plus a transmembrane region,[5] which also has some homology to certain immunoglobulin variable regions.[3]
