Poland–Uruguay relations are foreign relations between Poland and Uruguay. Uruguay has an embassy in Warsaw.[1]Poland maintains a General Consulate in Montevideo, under the Polish Embassy in Buenos Aires.[2][3] As of mid-2013, there were reports that Poland considered re-opening its embassy in Uruguay.[4]

History

Diplomatic links between Poland and Uruguay began on July 22, 1920, when the Polish envoy Count Orlowsky presented his credentials to the Uruguayan president Baltasar Brum.[5] Between 1922-1936 the Polish legation in Argentina was accredited for relations with Uruguay.[6]

During the Second World War, César Montero Bustamante was put in-charge of on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay for relations with the Polish exile government in London.[7]

On February 15, 2012 Carlos Brugnini was named new Uruguayan ambassador to Poland.[8]

Migration

There is a small group of people of Polish descent in Uruguay. The first Polish migrants to Uruguay arrived in the mid-19th century.[9] In the years before the First World War (1905-1914), Uruguay received working-class migrants from Poland.[10]
