Mazza Gallerie

Mazza Gallerie is a retail, dining and entertainment complex in the Friendship Heights neighborhood of northwest Washington, D.C.. Opened in 1978, the center is owned by TIAA-CREF and managed by CBRE Group.

Layout

The lowest four levels are an underground parking deck, labeled as Levels P1-P4. The next three levels are occupied by retail stores. The mall is anchored by Neiman Marcus, which is three levels (1-3), and a two-level Saks Fifth Avenue Men's Store (1-2)— the other departments are housed in a full-service Saks Fifth Avenue a few blocks away in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The third level of the mall houses a seven-screen AMC Theatres.[1] The complex is directly connected to one of the Western Avenue exits of the Friendship Heights Metro Station.

History

Mazza Gallerie was an early project of Herbert S. Miller's Western Development Corporation, which later developed Potomac Mills, Georgetown Park, and Washington Harbour among others. Miller brought together property owner Olga Mazza and Stanley Marcus of Neiman Marcus with a vision for a mixed retail and residential development, but the residential component was never approved.[2]

The center did not live up to its potential, seeing high vacancy rates.[3] In June 1997, a group headed by Daniel McCaffery, who owned the Friendship Centre development across Wisconsin Avenue, acquired the center for $28 million and embarked upon a major renovation. The redesigned center opened up the marble block exterior with new windows, better lighting, and additional entrances.[4] Among the new venues were a new General Cinemas theatre and an upscale 120-seat restaurant, The R Room, owned by General Cinemas but operated by the restaurant division of Neiman Marcus. It closed in December 2000[5] and whose space has since been vacant besides a tentant from 2007 to 2009.[6]
