Lincoln High School (Yonkers, New York)

Lincoln High School is located in Yonkers, New York. It is one of the seven public high schools in the city and has an enrollment of about eight hundred students. The front portion of the building was opened in 1953 as Southeast Yonkers Jr., Sr. High School with grades 6 through 8. It was completed in 1955 and renamed Lincoln Junior-Senior High School the following year. After the first year, 6th grade was dropped and 9th grade added and when the building was completed it became Lincoln Junior-Senior High School, enrolling grades 7 through 12. In the late 1970s, the junior high grades were removed, and the school became a four-year, grade 9-12, high school. Unlike what many believe, the school was named Lincoln after the area of Yonkers it was situated in, rather than for Abraham Lincoln. The first graduating class which went continuously from 6th grade to 12th grade graduated in 1960 with a very high percentage going on to college. Several graduates returned to Lincoln as teachers. The school colors are purple and white and mascot a Lancer both chosen by the 1960 class.

Students are taught by a team of designated core area teachers using interdisciplinary Instruction. There is a rich variety of academically sound support, study skills opportunities, personalized learning and personalized counseling.

Academy of Finance

The Academy of Finance is a specialized high school program that prepares students for careers in the financial services industry through coursework and on-the-job experience. As the financial services industry continues to grow, many firms face an overwhelming need for more qualified employees. The Academy of Finance at Lincoln High School in partnership with the Yonkers Chamber of Commerce, is working to fill local employment needs by preparing students for careers in the financial services industry. Developed in 1982 by American Express and the New York Public Schools, the program was initiated in Yonkers in 1989.

Additionally, students learn dress codes, office etiquette, resume preparation, and how to interview for a job.

In 2009-2010, The Academy graduated 44 seniors who were awarded over $2.5 million in scholarships.

Academy of Finance Advisory Board

The school's Academy of Finance has an Advisory Board whose mission is to sustain and support the development of Yonkers' youth toward personal and professional success in high school, in higher education, and throughout their career. The Advisory Board consists of corporate personnel, representatives from institutions of higher learning, representatives from community-based non-profits, local and regional government representatives, small-business owners and employees who offer vast and essential resources to the Academy. The Advisory Board provides classroom speakers, mentors, job-shadowing venues, funding for programs, and paid internships for Academy students.

Arts Academy

Majors in instrumental music, vocal music, stagecraft or visual arts Professional experiences with renowned visiting artists as well as with performing art centers such as the Manhattan Theater Club, Lincoln Center Institute, and S.U.N.Y. Purchase Teaching staff members are all professional performers who also have a strong academic background Also winning 7 National Gold Awards on a competition trip to Nashville Tennessee. Where an outstanding group of Lincoln High School Students gave there all to show how music and the arts should be more adulated.

Pre-Teaching and Educational Services Academy

College-bound students are prepared for post-secondary study which can lead to professional certification in teaching, psychology, social work, counseling and related fields Exploration of traditional and Montessori teaching methods State-of-the-art technology and electronic information systems are used Practical experience through school year and paid summer internships and mentoring Collaborations with local colleges, universities and The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Affiliation with “Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Teachers” mentoring students through college to future careers in teaching
