Kabisuryanagar is a town and a NAC in Ganjam district in the Indian state of Odisha.

Etymology

Kabisurya Nagar is named after the writer Kabisurya Baladev Rath. Kabisuryanagar was once called Boirani and was an important town of the Athgarh zamindari.

History

The Rajah of Athagarh, Balunkeswar Harichandan Jagadeb, belonging to the Baghel dynasty was the patron of Kabisurya Baladev Rath. Kishorchandranana Champu and many other works have been dedicated by Baladev Rath to the Raja of Athagarh. In Athagarh, which is near Kabisuryanagar there is the famous temple of Kanaka Durga Thakurani. As per legend Kabisurya Baladev Rath owes his literatary talents to the blessings of the goddess Kanakadurga. The Kanakadurga temple is managed by Madhusudan Harichandan Jagadeb, the last surviving zamindar of Athagarh and Tekkali. Also, Kabisuryanagar is famous due to Maa Mahamayee Temple and Banadevi Temple.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Kabisuryanagar had a population of 16,092. Males constitute 41% of the population and females 59%. Kabisuryanagar has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 53%. In Kabisuryanagar, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

Kabisurya Nagar is a main market for the green, fresh vegetables produced in nearby villages (Bolasara, Balyasara, Brahmanichhai, Mantapada, Arabindanagar, Gudiali, Jarada, Athagada, Pathara, Sundariapda, Golamundala, Sialia etc.).

Padmashri Dr. Ghanashyama Mishra, Ayurvedic Doctor, Founder of National Ayurvedic Pharmacy, manufacturing unit of above 400 classical and patent medicines in Kabisuryanagar. Also founder of 1. Dr. Ghanashyama Mishra Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya in Kabisuryanagar, 2. Bauribandhu High School in his own village, Khandadoli Raisinghpur Sasan, near Aska. Written many ayurvedic books, like Dravyaguna Kalpataru, Netrottama, etc.

Sri Basudev Mahapatra, National Awardee Teacher - Educator ( Retired ), eminent writer of Children's Literature. Founder - President of 1. Kabisurya Pratibha Parishada, which conducts Literary & Cultural Activities, 2. Banadevi Seva Sadan which runs Orphanage, I T I, Health Camp, rural developmental campaigning, Mass literacy program, etc.

Sri Nabaghana Parida, Folk Dancer ( Bharata Leela ), Member of Odisha Sangeeta Nataka Academy, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Represented Bharata Leela ( Folk Dance ) in national and international level.

Politics

The current MLA from Kavisuryanagar Assembly Constituency is V. sugyani kumari deo of BJD, who won the seat in State elections of 2009. Previous MLAs from this seat were Nityananda Pradhan of CPI who won this seat in 2000 and in 1990, Harihar Swain of INC in 1995, Radha Govinda Sahu who won representing INC in 1985 and as a candidate of INC(I) in 1980, and Tarini Patnaik of JNP in 1977.[2]

Kavisuryanagar is part of Aska (Lok Sabha constituency).[3]
