Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Mandaphia, situated in Mandaphia town of Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan,[1] is one of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas which are set up all over India. It is a part of the system of gifted education. The objectives of the scheme were to provide good quality modern education to the talented children predominantly of rural areas, without regard to their family's socioeconomic condition.[2]

The school was opened on 22 August 1987. There are approximately 557 JNVs across India as of now and it is one of them. It offers free education to all students who get selected through the admission process which includes an All India Entrance Exam, held at district level. It comes under the Jaipur region of Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.

Admission procedure

Talented students from Chittorgarh district are selected through an entrance Exam conducted each year by CBSE and are given admission to VIth standard/class in the school. The test is largely non-verbal and objective in nature and is designed to prevent any disadvantage to children from rural areas. Now admissions are also taken in Class IX and XI. This "Lateral Entry" system of giving admission in other classes than VIth is devised to fill the vacancies that arise due to withdrawal of admissions of the children who are admitted in class VI.[3]

Reservation

Seats are reserved for the children of rural areas. At least 75% of the seats of district are filled by candidates selected from rural areas and remaining seats are filled from the urban areas of the district.[4] Reservation of seats in favour of children belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes is also provided in proportion to their population in the concerned district.[4] These reservations are interchangeable and over and above the candidates selected under open merit. Efforts are made to ensure that one-third of the total seats are filled up by girls.

These students are given free accommodation, food and clothing and are allowed to continue their studies till class 12. All expenses are borne by the Government of India.

Student life

Academics

After admission in VIth standard, the study is in Hindi medium till IXth standard. IXth onwards the medium becomes English but Social Science remains in Hindi. The students of Board classes, Xth and XIIth are provided with extra facilities to make a better environment for studies. In last two months of their academic year, they are exempted from daily Physical Training and evening games. They are also provided with tea in early morning and late night. The courses of these classes must be finished before February so that students can focus on studying according th their preferences, for the final board exams takes place in March. Students till IXth standard have 6 subjects, including a third language subject Kannada, along with regular Hindi and English and Mr. Puneet Dashora is English Teacher in this Vidyalaya. Quiz for each subject is of one hour and three quizzes are taken in one day, which makes quizzes lasting for two days. There are four quizzes taken before Half-yearly exams and four after them. One quiz session takes place at the end of April, before summer vacations. Each quiz is of 25 marks for each subject. For the final grades, the best out of four quizzes are taken in each post and pre-half session, which makes their total weightage 150 (for IXth or earlier standards) or 125 (for post IXth standard). Both half-yearly and yearly have a weightage of 100 marks for each subject. The total weightage, for classes other than Xth and XIIth, for each subject thus becomes-

                               Quizzes= 25*2= 50.
                               Half-yearly=  100.
                               Yearly=       100.
                               Total=        250.

Although quizzes, half-yearly and pre-board exams are conducted for Xth and XIIth standards too, only the marks obtained in final board exam, which is conducted by CBSE, are counted. The results of class X and XII examinations of the school have been consistently on par with the overall CBSE national averages. There are eight periods for each standard daily, before lunch.
