Francis Augustus MacNutt

Francis Augustus MacNutt (February 15, 1863 — December 30, 1927)[1] was an Indiana-born Roman Catholic writer and diplomat who became the first American Papal Chamberlain.

Biography

Early life

Francis was born on February 15, 1863, in Richmond, Indiana. His father was a captain in an Ohio regiment during the Civil War. His parents were Episcopalians and his grandparents had been Presbyterians of largely Scottish and Scotch-Irish descent; however he writes in A Papal Chamberlain: The Personal Chronicle of Francis Augustus MacNutt of his discovery of the local church at the age of six.[2]

Death

Francis Augustus MacNutt died on December 30, 1927, and is buried in the graveyard of Santa Maria am Sand in Millan near Bressanone in the largely German-speaking province of South Tyrol, Italy.[1]
