Essential Foods manufactures and supplies dog and cat food across Europe. Its products are prepared in the United Kingdom, and ninety-five percent of the pet food ingredients are products of rural England, Wales, and Scotland. Red fallow deer, trout, and Gressingham Duck—heritage products of the United Kingdom—are among the ingredients. Essential Foods also contain vegetables, berries, linseed, fruit, and herbs. The company offers nine different types of food, none of which include grains.[1] Pet food that contains a high proportion of meant, fruit, and vegetables and low carbohydrate content is widely believed to be better for pet health.[2] Essential Foods are sold through online boutiques, retail distributors including Fressnapf in Denmark, Fifty Sheep in the UK,[3] Amazon.co.uk, and several independent retailers in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Poland, Norway, Sweden & Denmark.[4][5]

Essential Foods were developed with the aim of optimizing good behavior in companion animals, especially dogs, by ensuring stability of the animal's blood sugar levels.[6] The high proportion of meat and low cooking temperature used in preparing the food are meant to stabilize blood sugar.[6]

The company was established and is currently administrated by a Danish business man [7][8] who previously founded and was the CEO of Oliver's Petfood. A portion of the profits from Essential Foods is donated to charity.[9][10]
