Eskisehir Osmangazi University (Turkish: Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi), abbreviated as ESOGU, is located in Eskişehir, in the Eskişehir Province of Turkey.

About the University

Eskişehir Osmangazi University (ESOGU) is a state university that dates back to the foundation of the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture and the Faculty of Letters and Applied Sciences in 1970. These pioneering faculties became the founders of Anadolu University in 1972. These three faculties together with Eskişehir School of Health, Eskişehir Vocational School of Health Services, Institutes of Health Sciences, Metallurgy, and Applied Sciences, newly founded Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences and Institute of Social Sciences have formed Eskişehir Osmangazi University on 18 August 1993. Afterward other faculties and higher schools were founded.

ESOGU has now become one of the leading universities in central Anatolia with 11 faculties, 1 school, 4 vocational schools and 5 post-graduate schools, that are on 5 campuses. Currently, it has 29,822 students and 1507 teaching and research staff. In the body of ESOGU, there are 21 research, development and innovation centres operating in cooperation with state and private institutions.

Facilities

The campus has a central library, a 1,284-bed university hospital, oncology center, heart and thorax center, restaurants, sports facilities, two parks (a botanical garden, Cumhuriyet Parkı, covering an area of 80,000 m2 and Porsuk River Recreational Area located on an area of 72,000 m2).

Medium of instruction

The instruction language is Turkish except for the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and the Department of Computer Engineering. Students who will study in any of the following programs have to attend a one-year compulsory English course: Electrical&Electronics, Computer, Mechanical, Mining Engineering, International Relations, Tourism&Hotel Management. Apart from the university entrance exam language score which they use for application, Comparative Literature students must also attend a one-year compulsory language course to study English, German or French.

Admission

Students are admitted according to their scores in the examinations of Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) for higher education programs in Turkey.

Faculties and departments

Faculty of Medicine

Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Faculty of Medicine was established in 1970 and accepts nearly 200 new students every year. The education period is six years and the programme is annual. The education language is Turkish.

The faculty is composed of three departments, namely Basic Medical Sciences, Internal Medical Sciences and Surgical Medical Sciences.

Eight fully equipped main lecture halls with 150 student capacity and 8 small classrooms with 60 student capacity are located in the teaching hospital with more than 1100 bed capacity. Modern learning facilities of the faculty include clinical skills laboratories fully equipped with manikins; integrated laboratories for a multidisciplinary interactive education; a computer laboratory with its 100 personal computers each connected to the local area network and internet; the library with main textbooks, more than 200 periodicals, access to the internet, electronic databases, and online journals; 24-hour open emergency services, several health centers outside the university serving as education and research districts for public health education.

The main objective of Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Faculty of Medicine is to graduate erudite medical doctors having the scientific notion, learned the ways to access to scientific knowledge and how to use it, to conduct medical research independently, to perform their profession with not only evidence-based but also ethical approach, sensitive to the local, national and universal health issues.

Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Faculty of Medicine aims to achieve the three main missions of a medical faculty, i.e. medical education, health service and scientific research concomitantly and in accordance.

Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi Medical Faculty is academically assigned into three major sections; Basic Medical Sciences, Surgical Sciences, and Medical Sciences. Each section is composed of related departments and divisions. Medical education is coordinated by undergraduate and postgraduate educational units.

High School Diploma and placement through a centralized national university placement examination arranged by OSYM (Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Center) are required to admit the Faculty of Medicine.

Faculty of Dentistry

Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Faculty of Dentistry is an institution which serves quality dentistry training and treatment.

Purpose in dentistry;

In the faculty work is being done to increase the number of dental units and common laboratories.

Faculty serves in Meşelik Campus. There are technical and social optional lessons besides essential lessons.

Graduates of our faculty are able to work at private offices, public and private hospitals; in addition, they can also continue as an academician.

Students who successfully complete the program are entitled to a diploma of bachelor's degree in dentistry.

Faculty of Letters and Applied Sciences


Faculty of Arts and Sciences was established in 1973 as the School of Basic Sciences. In 1980, the Mathematics Department started education (the name of the department was changed as the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences in 2008). The Departments of Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Statistics were established in 1982. The Departments of History, Turkish Language and Literature and Comparative Literature were founded in 1983, 1996 and 2000, respectively.

Faculty of Arts and Sciences consists of eight departments: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Mathematics and Computer Sciences, History, Turkish Language and Literature and Comparative Literature. These departments also offer evening education programs.

The main goal of the faculty is to train students as professionals and scientists equipped with academic skills. For this objective, each department of the faculty offers various compulsory and elective courses on their fields.

Graduates from the faculty occupy leading positions in industry, government, education, media, and commerce. A considerable number of the alumni have also an academic career.

Departments of our faculty carry out graduate programs in cooperation with both the Institutes of Science and Social Sciences. Furthermore, the faculty makes important contributions to intellectual and scientific environment thorough researches made by its academic staff.

The faculty provides modern laboratory and research facilities such as laboratories for studies in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer as well as a conference hall for 230 audiences.

Students of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences have a remarkable rate of success. Our faculty encourages students to participate in academic activities and we are highly proud of the students awarded in scientific and cultural competitions.

Departments

Faculty of Engineering and Architecture

Faculty was established as Eskisehir State Academy of Engineering and Architecture then Departments of Mechanical and Civil Engineering started education with a total of 160 students in 1970. In 1982, it was attached to Anadolu University, Then On August 18, transferred to newly established Osmangazi University.

Evening education program is also available for 5 departments. Education in the departments of Electrical and Electronics Engineering is 100% in English, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Architecture is in 30% in English 70% in Turkish, The others are in Turkish.

The main purpose of Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture is to train engineers and architects who are compotent in their fields, practical-minded, creative and therefore favored by the business community. The faculty is a well-established organization which has been providing qualified engineering education since it was established.

The faculty has a considerable place among the country’s faculties of engineering and architecture in terms of qualified faculty members and has a strong academic staff.

By the end of April 2013, the faculty has 51 professors, 23 associate professors, 70 assistant professors, a total of 144 faculty members. Together with the 12 lecturers (5 of them are assistant professors), 69 research assistants and 1 specialist, 228 instructors are on duty. The faculty is in the top ten of Turkey in terms of number of instructors.

More than 60 vocational laboratories besides common physics and chemistry laboratories are available in the faculty.

MÜDEK, Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs’s mission is to contribute to enhancing the quality of engineering education in Turkey by means of the accreditation and evaluation of and providing information services for engineering education programs in different disciplines. Thus, MÜDEK aims at graduating better educated and qualified engineers in order to advance the welfare of the society.

Erasmus programs

The university obtained the Erasmus University Charter in 2004 and launched Erasmus exchange activities for students and teaching staff in the academic year 2005-2006.

Library facilities

The Central Library can accommodate up to 1000 users at a time, and there are private study rooms for researchers. The library has a small collection of books, periodicals, databases and a wireless internet connection.

There is an opportunity of reaching over 25,000 journals, articles, study reports and theses in full text by using many databases such as Science Direct and Web of Science.

Cultural activities

Students can take part in cultural and sports activities in the university according to their fields of interest. Some of the clubs are Turkish World Friendship, Economics and Administration, Computer, Environment and Art, Youth and Sports, Mountaineering, Theatre, Modern Dance, Turkish Art Music, Folk Dance and Pop Music.

The university is a member of the Caucasus University Association.[1]
