Emraan Hashmi filmography

Emraan Hashmi is an Indian film actor who appears in Hindi films.^[1] He started his career as an assistant director for the horror film Raaz (2002). Hashmi made his acting debut with a leading role in the thriller Footpath (2003). Although, the film was a box-office failure, but Hashmi was praised role.^[2] His first commercially successful film came the following year with Anurag Basu erotic thriller Murder, in which he played the role of a victim of a murder and received critical acclaim for his performance.^[3] He followed this success with leading roles in the romances Tumsa Nahin Dekha: A Love Story (2004), Zeher (2005) and Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005), and the crime thriller Chocolate (2005), all of which performed poorly at the box-office except Zeher.^[4][5] Hashmi then played the role of a man, who owns a sex shop in his cousin Mohit Suri's thriller Kalyug (2005)—a moderate success which earned him favourable reviews.^[6]

Hashmi had five film releases in 2006. The romantic crime drama Gangster opppsite Kangana Ranaut and Shiney Ahuja was a major commercial success, grossing over ₹190 million (US$2.8 million) in India and Hashmi received a Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role nomination for his role. The thriller Aksar was also a financial success, though his other three releases that year failed at the box office.^[7][8] The series of poorly received films continued with two of his 2007 releases, the thrillers Good Boy, Bad Boy and The Train.^[9][10] The role of a gangster with a tragic past in Mohit Suri's romantic thriller Awarapan (2007) proved to be a breakthrough for Hashmi. Critics praise his performance and he received several acting nominations for it. His sole film in 2008 was Kunal Deshmukh romance Jannat, that was set against the backdrop of match fixing. Jannat was also profitable venture with earning ₹420 million (US$6.2 million) and was proved to be another turning-point in Hashmi's career.^[11]

The year 2009 saw him playing an artist who paints heroine Kangana Ranaut's future in the horror Raaz: The Mystery Continues, which was a sequel of his assistant directed film Raaz.^[12] The year 2012 was key for Hashmi, all three of his releases that year, the romantic comedy Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji, the psychological thriller Murder 2 and the biogeographical drama The Dirty Picture were major box office hits.^[13][14][15] Hashmi's three out of four films of 2012 were also financial successes. Among these were two of the sequels of his previous films, the horror Raaz 3, which was the third installment of the Raaz film series and the sequel of Raaz and Raaz: The Mystery Continues—and the crime thriller Jannat 2, the sequel of Jannat.^[16][17] Hashmi received critical acclaim as well as two Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor nominations for the thrillers Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010) and Shanghai (2012).^{[18][19][20][21]} The 2013 supernatural thriller Ek Thi Daayan was a commercial success and garnered him good reviews. During 2014 and 2015, Hashmi continued to work in a number of projects but experienced a setback.^[22] All the films in which he starred, including the romance based on his grandfather Nanabhai Bhatt and his two wives Hamari Adhuri Kahani—were critically and commercially unsuccessful, with the later being his fifth consecutive failure, though he received the praise for his performance in the later as well as in the sports drama Azhar (2016), where he played the role of a real life cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin.^{[23][24][25][26][27][28][29]}
