Edwin of Tegeingl

Edwin of Tegeingl (born about 1020 and died 1073) was a prince or lord of the cantref of Tegeingl in north-east Wales.[2]

Ancestry

Most medieval pedigrees identify Edwin's father as Gronwy, a descendant of Hywel Dda.[3] He may have been a great-great-grandson of Hywel Dda[2] although this is disputed.[3] From his name, it is clear he had Anglo-Saxon ancestry, and his mother is believed to have been Ethelfleda or Aldgyth, daughter of Eadwine of Mercia.[3]

Lordship of Tegeingl

Edwin is known to have been Lord or Prince of the cantref of Tegeingl.[2] The cantref formed the eastern part of Perfeddwlad (or Y Berfeddwlad) on the northern coast of Wales between the River Clwyd and Deeside. The territory, originally forming part of the Kingdom of Gwynedd, had been under the control of the Anglo-Saxons for several centuries and then changed hands several times between the two.[4]

Biography

Edwin was probably born between 1017 and 1020.[3] He is believed to have resided at Trefedwen near Rhuddlan. Although Edwin is sometimes called King of Tegeingl in the medieval pedigrees there is no reference to him in the chronicles of Wales; there are, however, references to his sons.[3] He appears to have been raised to the lordship of Tegeingl by Gruffydd ap Llywelyn,[3] ruler of most of Wales between 1055 and 1064. Edwin married Iwerydd (or Gwerydd[2]), sister of Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, Prince of Gwynedd and Powys.[5]

Descendants

Edwin had three sons, Owain, Uchdryd, and Hywel.[2] Many aristocratic North Wales families (particularly in Flintshire and Denbighshire) claimed descent from Edwin including the Mostyns of Mostyn and of Talacre.[2]
