Cody Garbrandt[3] (born July 7, 1991) is an American professional mixed martial artist currently competing in the Bantamweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As of August 27, 2016, he is ranked #5 in the official UFC bantamweight rankings.[4]

Background

Garbrandt was born and raised in Uhrichsville, Ohio, and began boxing at the age of 15, trained by his uncle, who was an Olympic alternate in the sport.[5] At Claymont High School, Garbrandt competed in wrestling, winning a state championship in 2007 as a freshman, and was a runner-up in 2008. Garbrandt was also a Senior National All-American in 2010, but ultimately turned his focus to boxing over wrestling. Despite not competing in wrestling during his final two years of high school, Garbrandt received interest from several Division I schools, but for academic reasons, he briefly attended a Division II school, Newberry College.[6] As an amateur boxer, Garbrandt compiled a 32-1 record. At the same time, Garbrandt also started in on an amateur MMA career, taking his first bout in 2009. He competed in several amateur fights in his native Northeast Ohio before turning professional in 2012.[7][8] Garbrandt is of maternal Cherokee descent and paternal Blackfoot descent.[9]

Mixed martial arts career

Garbrandt compiled an amateur MMA record of 6-2 before making his professional debut in 2012. Garbrandt compiled a record of 7-0, finishing six of his opponents via strikes. Prior to his finish of James Porter in May 2014, he moved from Ohio to Sacramento, California to train at Team Alpha Male in an attempt to further his career and enhance his skills.[7]

On the heels of a first-round finish of Charles Stanford in October 2014, he signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the fall of 2014.[8]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Garbrandt made his promotional debut against Marcus Brimage on January 3, 2015 at UFC 182.[10] He won the fight via TKO in the third round.[11]

Garbrandt faced Henry Briones on July 11, 2015 at UFC 189.[12] Garbrandt won the fight by unanimous decision.[13]

Garbrandt was expected to face John Lineker on February 21, 2016 at UFC Fight Night 83.[14] However, Lineker pulled out of the fight during the week after contracting Dengue Fever and was replaced by Augusto Mendes.[15][16] Garbrandt won the fight via TKO in the first round.[17]

Garbrandt faced fellow undefeated prospect Thomas Almeida on May 29, 2016 at UFC Fight Night 88.[18] He won the fight by knockout in the first round and also earned a Performance of the Night bonus.[19][20]

Garbrandt next faced Takeya Mizugaki on August 20, 2016 at UFC 202.[21] He won the fight via TKO in the opening minute of the first round.[22]

Garbrandt is expected to face current champion Dominick Cruz on December 30, 2016 at UFC 207.[23]
