Biography

Early life

He grew up in Moorooka, a suburb of Brisbane.[7] His father was a banker.[7] He attended Brisbane State High School.[6] He attended the University of Queensland on state and commonwealth scholarships, and he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Geology.[4][7]

Career

He worked as a geologist for the Department of Mines and Energy of the Government of Queensland.[1][2][3][7] After he quit his government job, he made his fortune by investing in coal.[1] His company, created in 1989, is called QCoal.[2][3][4][8] He digs coal from the Bowen Basin, including the Sonoma Coal mine.[4][7] He formerly sold coal to Macarthur Coal and Cleveland-Cliffs.[2][7] He now sells to JFE Holdings.[1]

Personal life

He lives in The Gap neighbourhood of Brisbane, and he is the second richest man in Queensland.[1][5] As of March 2012, he is worth an estimated US$1.2 billion or AUS3.78 billion.[1][4]
