Celle di Bulgheria is a town and comune in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. As of 2011 its population was of 1,934.[1]

History

The town was named after the Bulgars who settled here in the early Middle Ages. Celle di Bulgheria is a small town whose history is marked by two significant events: the allocation of the Bulgarians and the monks. The Bulgarians inhabited this land, reaching the foot of Mount Bulgheria and founding villages. The monks arrived from Bulgaria and Greece and founded monasteries and cells around which arose the first towns.

Probably, in one of the villages on the slopes of Mount Bulgheria came the seat of a laura (places of prayer) with cells; the core which is created around these sites took the name of "cells". In the end he obtained the name of Celle di Bulgheria.

From 1811 to 1860 he was part of the Torreorsaja district, belonging to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies Vallo District.

From 1860 to 1927, during the Kingdom of Italy it was part of the district of Orsaja Tower, belonging to the Environment Vallo della Lucania.

A Bulgheria Celle are to visit the picturesque old town with numerous stone portals, Palazzo De Luca, the church of Our Lady of the Snow with an altar of 1700 very distinctive, made of brightly colored marble (white, red, orange, blue and dark green). Behind the apse with half dome and polygonal walls, all decorated with stucco and neoclassical friezes.

A Poderia, a suburb of Celle di Bulgheria, is very strong devotion to Santa Sofia, to whom is dedicated the sanctuary votive site on the slopes of Mount Bulgheria.

Do not miss the excursions to Monte Bulgheria, which is a limestone massif, whose highest peak reaches 1,225 meters. Here is the cave that the population knows how to "Grotto of Our Lady", so named for two reasons: first, because it is said in a legend that lived there the Virgin, the latter because a sculptor created the image of the Madonna carved out of a stalagmite.
