The Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (Welsh: Ysgol Newyddiaduriaeth, y Cyfryngau ac Astudiaethau Diwylliannol, Caerdydd) is Cardiff University's school for training in media.[1] It is one of the journalism schools whose main universities are part of the Russell Group universities.[2] It was founded as the Cardiff Journalism School in 1970 by Sir Tom Hopkinson[3] and is the longest established postgraduate centre of journalism education in Europe. The school is considered to be one of the best training centres for journalists,[4] and is described as the "Oxbridge of journalism".[5]

The school is located in the Bute Building, a Grade II listed building in Cathays Park. The Head of the School is Professor Stuart Allan and the current Director of the Centre of Journalism Studies is Professor Richard Sambrook, former Director of BBC World Service and Global News.

The school is also home to Cardiff University’s Centre for Community Journalism (C4CJ)[6][7] which developed the world's first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on community journalism.[8]

The JOMEC Society

The Journalism Society is the school's official society under the banner of Cardiff University's Students' Union. It was founded by Miles McCormack in 2012. However, the name was shortened to the JOMEC Society when the new committee took over in 2013, as a way of conveying its close relationship with the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.

Since 2013, the society has held numerous events throughout the year including annual trips to BBC Wales and BBC London, a trip to Amsterdam, a Spring Ball, and industry talks from the likes of the presenters of BBC Scrum V, as well as regular alcoholic and non-alcoholic socials.

The society generally consists of a team of 10-12 members including the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Social Secretary, Inclusions Officer, Social Media Officer and General Officers.
