Highway system

Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR, E17) is a seaside expressway in Butterworth, Penang, Malaysia. This 14 km (8.7 mi) expressway connects Sungai Dua in the north until Perai in the south.

Route background

The Kilometre Zero of the expressway is located at Sungai Dua Interchange. Therea are some ships will be seen near Bagan Ajam Rest Area. The Penang Megamall is located end of the highway. It is the six lanes line and it is also the connecting highway to the Malaysia Federal Route 1. The north bound will bring travelers to Alor Setar while the south-bound will be bringing to motorists to Ipoh.

History

Construction began in 2003, and was completed in 2006. Began usage in January 2007. Sg Nyior residents protested high toll rate in February 2007. Sg Nyior toll booth collection had been postponed by the Ministry of Works.

This highway is built to reduce the heavy traffics on the Sungai Dua-Juru NSE in the rushing hours and the peak seasons. Nowadays it is also the usage for the Raja Uda's people to Perai and Megamall.

The people of Raja Uda can also travel half the road paid of the highway to the Sunway Carnival Mall.

Along this highway, you will also reach the ferry terminal from both bounds to cross to Penang faster. It is also one toll paid only to there. The Penang Bridge now is a heavy traffics bridge as it is the cheapest link to Penang.

Features

Notable features of the expressway include Sungai Prai Bridge, which bridges Perai River and Sungai Maklom Bridge, which bridges Maklom River.

Electronic Toll Collections (ETC)

As part of an initiative to facilitate faster transactions at the Perai and Bagan Ajam Toll Plazas, all toll transactions at two toll plazas on the Butterworth Outer Ring Road have been conducted electronically via Touch 'n Go cards or SmartTAGs since 1 June 2016.
