"Ashes to Ashes" is the seventh track on Faith No More's sixth studio album Album of the Year. It was the album's first single and was released on May 19, 1997.

When asked about the song, Billy Gould replied:

“ The bulk of that song was written the first week. We arranged it here, and then we sent Patton a tape. He was in Italy, but he came up with the lyrics and the singing right away. It was one of those songs that just clicked -- one of those songs that we do most naturally. That's our sound. ”

    1. A version which features a drum & bass intro and a wind sample in the background. This version appeared on UK pressings[12] (850 905-2) with a duration of 6m:05s and is largely ambient in nature, straying considerably from the original track. It is quite abstract in nature. On the Album of the Year bonus disc this remix is labeled "Ashes To Ashes (Automatic 5 Dub)",[13] and DJ Icey and Maestro are given credits in the linear notes.
    2. A completely different remix which features the spoken part "I see you" at the beginning. This version appeared on the European[14] and Australian pressing[15] (London Records - 850 911-2) and on the promotional UK (London Records - Ashes-1[16] ) and French (Barclay 3594[17] ) and pressings. However, on the UK and French pressings, the remix was correctly titled "Ashes To Ashes (Icey and Mystro Mix) with a duration of 3m:43s. This version is more faithful to the original album version with a simple trip-hop beat throughout. It is quite radio friendly in nature.
