The American Association of Immunologists (AAI) is a scientific society dedicated to the support of research in immunology. Founded in 1913, the AAI has published a journal, the Journal of Immunology, since 1915. It also holds annual scientific meetings and intensive summer courses in immunology. As of 2016, the AAI had approximately 7700 members. The president for the 2016-17 term is Harvard University professor Arlene Sharp.[1][2]

History

The AAI was founded on June 19, 1913, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by a group of physicians who were attending the annual meeting of the American Medical Association.[2] The original 41 members of the society were all disciples of Almroth Wright, the founder and director of the Inoculation Department at St. Mary’s Hospital in London.[3] The first AAI annual meeting was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on June 22, 1914.[4] AAI is a founding member society of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB).

Activities

The AAI hosts an annual scientific meeting for its membership, recently typically in May, and organizes intensive summer courses in immunology. The association also publishes a major journal in the field, The Journal of Immunology, and the AAI Newsletter.[5][6]
